Sasines

Post by trish1 » Wed Dec 28, 2005 1:53 pm

After much confusion I think I have discovered that a sasine (I hope the spelling is correct - I am sure my pronounciation is not) is a registration record of a piece of property. I have a will which says ...
Dated the 9th and recorded in the new par. ?? Register of Sasines re versions and kept at Perth for Perthshire the twelfth days of November 1867.

Another is Dated the sixth and registered in the division of the general register of Sasines applicable to the county of Perth the thirteenth days of November 1874.

What do I have to do to access copies of these records.
Thanks

Trish

Hi Trish,
If you write, or e-mail the National Archives of Scotland (address on their web site).
With the info you have they will check the amount of pages in the sasine and give you an estimate for photo copies to be sent to you.
All the sasines are held in the NAS.
As you probably know they all to do with land or property ownership and a lot of it is legal jargon.
Happy Hunting! :D

I now have a reply and both sasines will cost me 20 pounds. Does anyone have an idea as to how many pages this would be?

thanks

Hi Trish
Copying fees and charges for NAS are outlined here:
http://www.nas.gov.uk/searchRooms/copyingFees.asp

(so you should be able to work it out!! )
So, if you meant it was £20 for both sasines (rather than £20 each) it looks like each sasine copy will be between 1-10 pages long....

best wishes

Many thanks for that - it seems I might be paying 10 pounds for 1 page - interesting that they didn't say how many pages - just the cost. Here it is usually about $1 per page - so I was thinking there must be lots of pages - silly me :(

Hi Trish
I've always thought that you are paying for the fact they have to locate the documents you are looking for, retrieve them from wherever they are stored, etc. and by the time the volume or document gets to the photcopying stage it makes very little difference to them if it is 1 or 10 pages which need copying. However, these are just my thoughts on the issue!

Its a bit of a lottery like the wills & testmants online at SP, I guess. For your £5 per testament you may strike lucky and get a wonderfully detailed twenty page document or it may just be one page of the barest essentials!

best wishes
