IGI - familysearch.....

Post by annpa » Wed Mar 01, 2006 8:25 pm

Hi all.
I think I would like to order a film from Salt Lake City. How do I go about it? I have looked up the record I want, and found the call number. But when I go in to the Family History Library Catalog nothing seems to work.

For example I have looked up the record of Christian Farquhar born 18 Sep 1836, Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, scotland.
I click on her name and I get the IGI individual record.
Below is the Batch No, C119587, Source call No: 1041090 and 0889472 and the Printout call no: 6901524.
If I click on the Source Call Nos I get the catalog entry of the film 1041090 and the film notes.
If, on the Family History Catalog screen I click the film/fiche button, I get the same thing.
How do I go about then ordering that film? People have said something about forms and things but I can't find them. Do I have to get it through a LDS church?
And what is the Printout call No?
I can't really find any helpful hints on the site.
Cheers

Hi Annpa

We have spoken before about having Farquhars from Paisley but haven't found a connection.
I can't help with the LDS films unfortunately, but I had already found this family on Freecen and filed them away ! You may already have this

Silk Street , Abbey (Paisley )

Farqhuar John M 39 Twister outside county
Mary F 38 outside county
Mary F 15 Drawgirl outside county
James M 11 Renfrewshire
Janet F 9 Renfrewshire
Christina F 4 Renfrewshire
Elisabeth F 10m Renfrewshire

I feel that I do have a connection - but as yet can't find it !
Hope this is of use to you

Hello Annpa

To the best of my knowledge, you have to order the film through a LDS family history centre. There is a small fee to pay and when the film arrives you can use the equipment at that centre to look at your film. On the home page of the familysearch site there is an option to search for your local centre, so you can find the one closest to you. They are not all located at an LDS Church and not all LDS Churches have a FHC attached.

The printout call number relates to being able to order a printout of the birth/christening/marriage entry that you have found. My parents used the LDS for their family history research many moons ago. They used to order a printout rather than a film for their records of interest.

Hi Annpa:

I was a volunteer at our local FHC in Toronto back in the eighties. I am not a mamber of the church so I can't remember or don't what all the numbers are for.
However, since you have the film number it best to go to your local FHC and have them order the film, It'll take about three weeks. There's a small fee for the film rental, mostly postage. When it arrives, they will call youvand at that time you'll make an appointment to look at the film. ( you have book a time to reserve their readers, always in high demand.) That's it.
Any questions there are always helpful volunteers to guide you through it and there is usually other patrons who can help as well. Good luck.

Thanks for all the useful tips. There is a FHC not far away and they have now posted the opering hours for research on the web. Previously there were no opening hours and so the phone went unanswered/ Now I know when someone is there! Thanks too for the info about the printout. I think I might have a go at that as well for OPRs.
Cheers

Ps Morag - am going to reread your post about the Paisley Farquhars. I, too, am sure there should be a connection, but I can't get the birth details of my John Farquhar. Will do a separate post on these Farquhars when I have got it sorted in my mind.
Cheers
