By the way can anyone make out Hannah's surname?

Hi Andy,

It looks like Mellew to me. Could it be a spelling variation of a name I have come across in Midlothian / East Lothian - Mealyou.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andy,

Good to see you posting again. I was home this year but didn't spend much time in Greenock, so didn't have a chance to get in touch with you.

I think the name on the record could be Moller.

Could it be Mollen or Mullen?
We're not really seeing enough to get a grip on the man's hand, but depending on how sloppy his crossed "t"s are, it could even be Mathew, perhaps? (but that would have to be a very sloppy "h" too!)

If that is Mary Gallacher above, then the starting "M" is also in doubt in my mind - it does not look at all like the M in Mary. It may be an N...but then again, I feel I'd need to see more of his hand.

Best wishes
Lesley

Ancestry's transciption is Moller, but that needn't turn it into a fact.

All the best,

Can we not attack old Hannah from a different angle
- how old is she? where was she born?
...I'm not really sure what her relationship is given as either- I'm maybe just having one of those "blind" moments.... is it clear to anyone?

Her relationship looks like relation, but then again William Lynch looks like......bounder!!!

Hi Helen
William Lynch looks like......bounder

Maybe he was, but he was also a boarder in the household.
I think you migth be right with relation - this enumerator is not a great help!! I'm sure that was not one of the standard items they were supposed to enter.... I thought they were supposed to stipulate what kind of relation - niece, granddaughter, cousin or whatever.

Best wishes
Lesley
