Hi again Marilyn,
Here's a clarification. 37 Parade apparently was a private sanitarium. I couldn't find my copies of the Providence directory entries so I went back to do them again. In 1907, 37 Parade is listed as Private Sanitarium with six nurses listed under that heading: Sophia Grant, Jennie Ross, Mina Stewart, Jessie Clerihew, MJ Barker, and Nellie MacLeod.
Parade St. is intersected by both Willow St. and Hollis St. so you probably did cross it when you were out taking pictures!

Hi Carol,Parade St. is intersected by both Willow St. and Hollis St. so you probably did cross it when you were out taking pictures!
I knew it.....
I remember passing by a big Gothic building (its a home for the elderly now) maybe it used to be a sanitarium? I'll check it out down the road, maybe my mum remembers?
Well I went to lunch today by way of Providence and dropped by the archives and hold onto your hat, because its your lucky day.
I called Ken at the RI Archives first to make sure the death of Eleanor was available and after he confirmed it was, I dashed over to grab a copy.
Ken surprised me when I walked in by handing me the copy and not charging me the 15 cents. Ah, finally I get something for my tax dollar.
I'll scan the document later tonight (need to get back to work) but here's some of the info for now
Eleanor Longmuir b. 5 June 1863 d. 20 December 1921 she was 58 yrs, 6months, 15 days. Place of Death: 6 Norwich Avenue, Usual Residence Same. Birthplace: Belfast, Ireland. Father, Hugh Heron - Mother, Jane (Gibson) Heron. Both parents were born in Ireland.
Now for the bad news, do you remember me telling you about the cemetery that the funeral director has to go to the owner's home, to get him to open a grave? Its the very same cemetery that Eleanor is buried in, "Oakland Cemetery" (I may have called it Oaklawn?) So it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack for me to try and find her grave.
Well that's all I have time for at the moment, but I'll be back later to share some other news.
Regards
Marilyn

Now that's what I call service--from both you and Ken!
Thanks again!
I called my sister earlier to fill her in on Jessie's nursing career and she was wondering if Jessie had to be licensed here in the US. This led to us wondering what kind of training she had in Aberdeen or over here. My sister also suggested that I google for the sanitarium. She said if it was large enough, there might be pictures of the staff. She's an RN herself and says nurses are always getting their pictures taken!
I'll do some looking tonight and let her know about the death cert. tomorrow too.
You know, if you waited until Halloween to go back to Oakland Cemetery, you might end up with another interesting story.....

There's no name of the sanitarium listed? Let me know because I know someone at the Providence City Archives who may be able to shine some light on this mystery.
I would say Jessie needed to be licensed by the State of Rhode Island to be working as a nurse, so perhaps she just needed to pass an exam to get her new license in the State of Rhode Island.
Today, I called the Rhode Island Hospital Library and they will do research, but possibly at a price? The woman who I needed to speak with is off until Monday.
At this point it might be best to set aside calling her, until this sanitarium question is answered.

No name for the sanitarium listed, just the address. When I tried to Google it, I got listings for everything that had the word sanitarium in it! I did find out that many of the costume jewelry companies farmed out the making of their products to the patients in these sanitariums. I thought that was interesting.
If you would like to find out what the cost of the research on Jessie's nursing credentials is, I think my sister would be very interested in that search!
Also, I just finished reviewing Alexander Longmuir's entries in the city directories. It turns out that he was still alive in 1941 at the age of 86! He was living at 30 Case Ave., East Providence with his daughter and son-in-law. This came up under the Cranston, RI directory search.
I was just about to Mapquest Case Ave. I wonder if it is anywhere near your infamous Oakland Cemetery?

OK say no more, I'll contact good old whats his name ( ) at the Providence Archives. I'm having a jr. sr. moment and can't remember the dude's name to post it. Yes, its true that jewelry companies farmed out their work and still do to this day, to the Trudeau center here in Rhode Island. It was called piece work and you were paid by the numbers of links you joined together in one day. I can attest to this for a fact, because a friend of mind did this type of work from her home and I worked for a "rest home" years ago with many handicapped woman who did "piece work."

Fair enough, I'll get the facts for ya.

The Rhode Island Death records go up until 1950, so maybe Alexander passed on before then?
Hello Ken can ya do another look up for me before I run up there? I'll check for ya.
East Providence is East of Providence and heading for Cape Cod, Massachusetts, I'd say 30 Case Avenue would be approx 5 + miles away from the other addresses we've been discussing

No Case Avenue isn't anywhere near Oakland. Oakland Cemetery is off of Broad Street, which is the area your Clerihew lived in. By the way, Oakland was a grant cemetery in its day. The day I drove over there and around the cemetery looking for my relative, I noticed a very beautiful chapel. It hadn't been used for many a year, but beautiful none the less.
This cemetery abuts Roger Williams Park ( which I mention earlier in this thread) , so the folk buried there have a very peaceful resting place.
I did find out where my gg Aunt Mary Dixon was buried on the way out, when I let my dog out of the car to do her business. I looked up and there was her stone "Mary Dixon Nelson" OMG I could have fainted. :

Hi Marilyn,
I just tried the reverse look up for 37 Parade St. I got no results so I tried just Parade St. and got quite a few! If you scroll down there are eight people living at 31 Parade St and the last listing is Parkview Nursing Home! I wonder if the sanitarium wasn't demolished and replaced by the nursing home?
Also, I noticed on Eleanor's death cert. that her address was 6 Norwich Ave. not 8 Norwich Ave. I check the census records and it is 6 on them too. I think the 8 Norwich address came from a ship's passenger list. On the 1920 census, Eleanor and Alexander's daughter Eleanor and her husband Ralph Lord are renting 8 Norwich Ave.!
When I Mapquested 30 Case Ave. I got a location south of Auburn, RI, north of Pocasset, RI and west of I-95. Not sure how this can be East Providence when it is south of Cranston and west of the bay?

Hi Carol,
You're a good detective! I didn't know you could bring up everyone on the street. So I had to remove the link to protect their identities.
Well I have one more trick up my sleeve
I'm going to pm you a link to the Providence, RI Assessor's Tax Database and its all cued up to Parade Street. Don't worry I didn't break into their office this afternoon, its Public Record and posted on-line. I didn't see 31 Parade St. listed, but maybe you'll have better luck then I? If you do find it, there'll be a picture of the property.
I can see why there was a mix up on the Norwich address, their both in the same building.

6 Norwich is the second building and its the door on the left.

The 30 Case Ave in the Auburn section of Cranston, sounds more like it. The Auburn section is right off of Elmwood Avenue (where Grace Cemetery is located.) Elmood Avenue & Broad Street run parallel to one another and all of these address's for your relatives run off of these two streets.

Marilyn,
The tax database is fascinating! You have to leave off the street numbers on this one too because they don't match the addresses that we have. I found the nursing home. It says it was built in 1960 and is now at #41. If you look at 61, 77, or 81 you can see that this was an area of huge old houses built from 1853 to 1905 so any one could have been a private sanitarium. Number 37 is probably gone by now unfortunately! I also looked up 20 Hollis and 6 Norwich. The database says they were built in 1920, but they sure look like the same style as earlier houses. Each has 14 or 15 rooms so even if they were duplexes, there was room for relatives.
There is no 83 Willow St. but 82 sure looks familiar!
