Richmond - Scotland to Saskatoon

Post by prufrockster » Sun Oct 05, 2008 2:59 am

I am looking for Richmond family descendants in Canada, and possibly the US.

My Great-Grandfather, William Richmond, is believed to have emigrated from Paisley, Scotland to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada sometime just after his wife Jeanie (Jane) Richmond need Galbraith died in 1913. William was born in Paisley in 1874 and was a Baker in Scotland. He may have emigrated with his 2 youngest children, daughters (my Great Aunts) Mary (b. c1901) and Jeanie Galbraith (b. c1907).

If you have any information, it would be great to hear from you.

Thanks, Drew Hayes

Trish, Thanks for the info. It is a possibility that William and his wife went to visit someone in Saskatoon that had already emigrated. I think that William did travel to Canada a number of times, but certainly did not live there whilst his wife was alive. James could be his father (my G-G-Grandfather) James Richmond who was also a baker and died in Paisley Scotland in 1928, or his brother James (b.1886, d. ?), or his son James (b. 1893, d. ?), but this youngest James later emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa (1920 ?).

Thanks again, Drew.

Hi Drew:

Richmond - Allan 29, Margaret 28, Jemima 2, James 24, James 66 and Mary Gilmour Richmond 62 are in the same house as William aged 33 in the 1911 Canadian census. Allan is the head of the house, James and William are his brothers and James 66 their father, and all are listed as bakers.

The records give month and year of birth, which is helpful.

Thanks Frances. Very interesting. They seem to be my family.

My G-G-Grandparents were:

James Richmond - b. Paisley, Scotland 1846, d. Paisley, Scotland 1928. In 1911, he would have been 65.
Mary Richmond nee Gilmour - b. Beith, Scotland 1849, d. Paisley, Scotland 1923. In 1911, she would have been 62.

Their children were Janet Hamilton Kilpatrick nee Richmond (1873-1961), William Richmond - my G-Grandfather (1874-?), Isabella Fraser Young nee Richmond (1877-1957), Mary Gilmour Waters nee Richmond (1880-?), Allan Gilmour Richmond (1881-?), and James Richmond (1886-?).

So it looks like in 1911, Allan, his wife Margaret (?) and daughter Jemima are living in Canada and are visited by Allan's parent's James and Mary, and brothers James and William (although his age is not quite right).

James Sr and Mary, and William obviously return to Paisley, but James may have stayed. After William's wife dies in 1913, I think he must emigrate to Canada with his 2 youngest children, Mary Richmond and Jeanie Galbraith Richmond; to be with brothers Allan and James and their families.

Much appreciated. Drew.

Thanks Trish. It seems William did go to Canada in 1910, but I don't think he emigrated at that time as he had a wife and children back in Paisley, Scotland. His wife died in Feb 1913. Is there any record of William Richmond, b.1874 and/or Mary Richmond, b. c1901 and Jeanie Galbraith Richmond b. 1907 travelling to Canada in 1913 or after ?

Also, looking for James Richmond b. c1893 travelling to Cape Town, South Africa.

I don't know whether or not you belong to Ancestry.com.au , but if not I would be happy to do some lookups for you.

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew

I do belong to Ancesty.com but thanks for your kind offer.

Do you have an occupation for James (South Africa) ? or was he a baker also ?
