Hi,
The above-mentioned was the daughter of Alexander Hunter and his wife Margaret Hendry and until 1851 was living @ Mains of Brux.
The family MI @ Kildrummy has her dead/interred @ Ancaster, America aged 39 years.
Have been unable to trace a marriage in Scotland and the only Ancaster
I can find is in Canada

Hi Ysabeau,
I guess it depends on the frame of reference - Canada is part of North America, so it could very well be Ancaster, Canada. [That was the only one I could find as well] But if you think she may have been in the United States of America, could the inscription have been in error and maybe should have been Lancaster, America -as in Lancaster, Pennsylvania?
Those are the two options that come to mind directly.

Hi Ysabeau,I have just this week come across a similar instance of a rellies info stating birth occured in Montreal, America.Montreal is in Quebec and province of what is now called Canada.I have no idea if this error has anything to do with the fact that the birth happened prior to 1867 when Canada came into being. However , we did indeed find proof of this birth in the records for montreal,Canada .Could America be the continent instead of the country?
Just a thought,

As far as many people in Scotland were concerned, everything over there was "America".HeatherK wrote:Hi Ysabeau,I have just this week come across a similar instance of a rellies info stating birth occured in Montreal, America.Montreal is in Quebec and province of what is now called Canada.I have no idea if this error has anything to do with the fact that the birth happened prior to 1867 when Canada came into being. However , we did indeed find proof of this birth in the records for montreal,Canada .Could America be the continent instead of the country?

Thank you Catherine, HeatherK and Davie for responding.
I think my only option is to persevere with the 1860 American and Canadian census although it's only a lack of Simpson/Hunter births in Scotland that make me think they may have emigrated before 1860.
