Trying to find Veitch family

Post by Brookes » Mon Jun 01, 2009 11:31 pm

I am trying to find descendants of my Great aunt ,who emigrated to Canada in 1911. They sailed on the Cassandra to Montreal and subsequently arrived in Vancouver. She was a Catherine Gellatly before her marriage andher husband was James William Veitch who was a printer.
She and her husband were both born in Scotland and I know that his death was 22 Aug 1949 & she died on 1 Apr 1959.

The only address I have been able to find is 817 West 20th St N. Vancouver.

I have lots of pictures taken when they were building their house/ houses but sadly don't know where any of these were located in Vancouver.

They had at least one son G***** born after they arrived in Canada, but I have not been able to find any details about him.

Grateful if anyone can suggest any way to try and find him or his family.

Helen

Hi Helen:

Regrettably, we are unable to help search for possible living persons on the board. Please see our guidelines http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ing+person

There are some sources which may be of help http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ing+person

Did they go out to Vancouver to join Veitch family members? There are quite a few listed in the 1911 census, but not James W. or Catherine.

Hi Helen

I realize you have the dates of death for both Catherine and her husband James but do you have actual copies of their death certificates? The indexes available online will give you specifics enough to order copies of the originals http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual ... events.htm The originals should give you an informant's name and address and relationship to the deceased. If you don't want to order a certificate perhaps a RAOGK individual would obtain the data for you. http://www.raogk.org/bcolumbia.htm
I was hoping to find a child born to them after their 1907 marriage and before they left Scotland in 1911 who also would appear in the online marriages indexes of British Columbia before 1932 but there are none that I can be sure of!!

I'd go the informant route and if that fails try and find where Catherine and James are buried or find an obituary.

Don't give up!

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Helen,

GELLATLY caught my attention in your post.
My Late Husband's family have a connection to the Gellatly's but
I don't know of a Veitch .
Maybe we share other names connected to the Gellatly's

Cheers,
Maureen

Hello Helen,

You probably know all this but James William Veitch had a brother Henry George Veitch and he and his wife Lillias (Lily), nee Brown, according to Ancestors-On-Board, were also on the “Cassandra” in 1911.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin ... e&id=I2726

“Sheila” was chasing this family in 2001 but at the time didn’t know of the Canada connection http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.vei ... 98/mb.ashx

Maybe “Dave Ravie” or “Sheila” have learned something new in the last eight or nine years.

This looks like Henry on this page. Died Trail, B.C. in 1960. http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/people/veitch_hg.shtml

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Many Thanks for all your replies and help.

Frances Apologies for breaking the rules but I assumed that their son was probably also dead .

I shall try some of your suggestions and will let you know how I succeed.

Maureen re the Gellatlys Catherine and her brothers and sisters were allbut one born in Edinburgh and her parents came from Dunkeld in Perthshire.

Alan Just to show how stupid I am I saw the other Veitchs on the Cassandra lists but did not know that they were brothers so thanks for that. I hadn't looked further at the Veitch side as it is the Gellatly side I was following.

Jean Thanks. I have not got the actual death certificates so will order those. I know that they had no children when they left Scotland but can't find anything to say when their family was born. My mother is 90 and doesn't remember too much about dates.

Not descendents but thought you might be interested just the same.
This looks like James and family in 1901 at Edinburgh.

Name: James Veitch
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1879
Relationship: Son
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Margaret
Gender: Male
Where born: Edinr, Midlothian
Registration Number: 685/2
Registration district: St Andrew
Civil parish: Edinburgh St Cuthberts
County: Midlothian
Address: 11 Rodney St
Occupation: Letterpress Machineman

Name Age
James Veitch 46 b Burntisland, Fife
Margaret Veitch 47 b. Dalkeith, Midlothian
James Veitch 22
Francis Veitch 20
George Veitch 19
Kenneth Veitch 16
Robert Veitch 14
Agnes Veitch 12
Alexander Veitch 9
Thomas Kerr 22

Actually I find it quite interesting (in other words I'm being nosey) that you're looking for descendents of Catherine. Did James die and she married again? :?

Regards,
Annette

Thanks Annette.
James died in 1949 and Catherine (Kate) died 10 years later. I am interested as she was one of my Grandmother's sisters and although they were close contact seems to have been lost after she Kate died. I know definitely that they had a son, but don't know if there were any other siblings.

We have an album of pictures of their early years in Canada and it would be great if we could identify some of the people in them.

Good luck Helen I tried for years to find my Great-Aunt Catherine & her descendants who left Midlothian for Canada at the same time as yours. She was the eldest of my Grandfather's sisters & we had lots of letters, cards & photos of her & her family in their homestead in Sask.We have Veitch in our tree(her Grandfather was John Veitch) so all the photos with James Veitch on them we thought was a connection of ours. It turned out that one of her Lindley sister-in-laws had married a Veitch.
We finally made connection through the Lothians Family History Society & A.
It turns out that Catherine Scott nee Lindley had outlived all her siblings dying in 1976 & she had remarried so that's why could never find her death.
Her daughter had nine children so lots of descendants out there to find!
