The Dunn Family from Lonaconing, Maryland

Post by LadyJax » Thu Aug 06, 2009 10:43 pm

Hi, my name is Jacqueline and I am a 9th Generation Dunn.
Our family history so far.. begins in Belfast, NI in 1777 where James Dunn and Sarah Mckenzie had 6 children, the eldest being Hiram Dunn to whom I am direct descendant from.
James and Sarah sailed to Amercia after the birth of their first 2 sons but were unhappy there and came back and settled in Cumbernauld, Scotland.
Hiram Dunn married Georgina Pond and had 4 children.. one of them being my great, great Grandfather... Gavin McKenzie Dunn.
None of this line moved and settled in Amercia but James Dunn the 2nd the brother of Hiram Dunn and son of James Dunn, he was in the Royal Navy and came to the US just as the Civil War was ending and he and other group of men jumped overboard and swam to shore in Balitmore Harbour. He made his way to Lonaconing,MD and worked in the coalmines and he married Jane Stevenson on the 17/08/1868 and they had 11 children.
Another son of James Dunn emigrated to the US and that was Stewart Mckenzie Dunn and was believed to stowed away on a ship to New York and made his way to Lonaconing to be with his brother, he married Marjorie Shaw Beveridge and had 8 children.
We know the names of the children borne to James and Stewart and so on as we have done a lot of work but we are looking for descendents of this line today as our work as only gotten us so far.
So if you are from this family please get in touch and we will share information.
Thanks

Hi Jacqueline

...and welcome to Talking Scot

Looks like no one who has read this so far has a connection to your Dunn family, but new members are joining every day, so you may strike lucky eventually.

Meanwhile, if you have any areas of your research with which you need some help, don't hesitate to post a query. :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jacqueline,
I found your post from a year ago and am hoping to contact you. I am trying to find information on my great-grandfather who was also named James Dunn and who also had a son named Hiram. He lived in Scotland his entire life, but did travel to the US in the early 1900s to visit only. I am not certain of the name of his parents. He was married to Helen Banks and they are the parents of my maternal grandmother, Mary Dunn Carlisle. I was hoping that there might be some connection to the Dunn family that you have mentioned in your above post.
Sincerely,
Cathy

Hello Cathy, and Welcome to TalkingScot.

It appears to be quite a while since Jacqueline last visited the forum. If you don’t hear from her you could try sending a Personal Message. That would possibly have more chance of reaching her than of her seeing your post. If you logon you’ll see the PM links.

All the best,
Alan

Hi Cathy,

I sent you a personal message, with my email add so that you can contact me directly.

It looks we are distant cousins as James and Helen are my 2nd Great Grand Uncle and Aunt. Just let me know what information you need as my dad as done a lot of work and we got as far back as 1777 and Northern Ireland. There is a lot of information that you may have that we dont have about the branch of the family that went to the States, so hopefully we can help each other.

So nice to hear from you and hope we can keep in touch.

Jacqui
