1930 US census - possible free access

Post by LesleyB » Tue Aug 11, 2009 11:01 am

Hi all
Not looked at this in detail, so not sure if there are any catches.
www.Footnote.com is offering the US 1930 Census for free for the month of August

Hope it is of use to someone.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Allan (Currie) made a similar post on this a few days ago (thanks Allan)...it's exceptionally slow, so I gave up! I did notice that when the census page came up a box popped up asking for payment in order to view it, which apparenty isn't supposed to happen...it's supposed to be free.

Thanks for the reminder, I'll try again.

Regards,
Anne H

I have had some success. Thanks to Allan for posting. It is incredibly slow and often I get "please try later." However, they do mention that if the overload problem isn't solved shortly, they will work out an extension or something to accommodate the free offer people. I have not experienced any "catches" or payment requests and they appear to have honorable intentions.

By signing in at 6:00 a.m. USA/east coast time I have obtained about 8 relevant census pages.

Best wishes to all, Mary Ellen

Hi Mary Ellen,

I wonder what I'm doing wrong since I couldn't seem to get past that pop-up box asking for payment (I know it isn't a con and the images are free so it must be me).

As for getting up at six in the morning...I'll leave that to you...I go to bed much too late to get up so early.

Anne H

Hello, Anne!

I remember a box for "get your free access now." I did have to sign up as a "free footnote member," which I'm sure you must have done (or tried to). If you can see the big family name Search box, I suggest you use it and see where it throws you next. I see boxes to "consider" paid membership levels every time I log on.

What, no Florida sunrises for you? Maybe late at night would also work if there aren't too many obsessives still at it. Good luck - and apologies for feeding you so much obvious information. I know you're not new at this.

I’ve found three so far (Minnesota, Wisconsin & Idaho) and haven’t had any difficulties because I usually search while the USA is sleeping. I read somewhere it’s supposed to be 97% complete (or whatever). I can’t find one in Los Angeles County CA that should be there according to Ancestry’s index.

Hi Alan,
So it's in the index but there is no image? If the image comes up blank, you can send them a contact form about it. If they won't let you do that since you don't have a subscription, send me the details and I will do it. It takes quite a bit longer to get things fixed than at SP, but they do eventually act on the corrections.

Cheers,
Sarah

All the best,
Alan

Thanks for this!!

I've had great success with all the relatives I know emmigrated. Bit of trouble due to a mis-transcription but I've now nearly discovered where all of my GGrandfather's siblings ended up and that they all ended up working around the game of golf!
