Bit of a preamble ..... Sorry!
I'm investigating lateral braches of my tree and found that, apart from a birth date and place, I had no information on a Great Granduncle, James Lynch born 1888 in Port Glasgow.
Ages ago I'd found various Ellis Island records for rellies I knew had visited America in the 1920's. However, during a new lookup I came across a cancelled entry for Hugh Lynch who was meant to be travelling on 1st Jul 1923 with the intention to stay. He was going to Join his brother James at 11 Poplar Street, Brooklyn. Hugh actually arrived onboard another Ship on 3rd Sep 1923. Same address.
Back on 1st of July 1923 a different ship, to the one on which James was meant to have travelled, arrived in New York carrying John Riddell, James and Hugh's nephew. He too was intending to stay permanently. He was going to join his cousin, Mary McCarron, 11 Poplar Street, Brooklyn.
I've tried for years to find out who this "Cousin" is. A few weeks ago I found a elder sister for James and Hugh's father, also Hugh. Her name was Bridget Lynch and she married a chap called James Fury in Port Glasgow. They produced a Mary. I was hoping to tie this Mary in with Mary McCarron but she died unmarried at 19 in Port Glasgow. The mother had married quite late and only produced Mary before she died in 1880 when Mary was just one-year-old.
Still no clue about Mary McCarron.
I was playing around with Steve Morse's scripts on www.stevemorse.org when I happened across a James Lynch of the correct age arriving in New York 31st Jan 1921. He was returning home from Buenos Aires. His address: 11 Poplar Street, Brooklyn !
This was an excellent find because it stated that he was Naturalized on Aug 15th 1916 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was single.
First question:
How long did/do you have to be resident in the U.S. before applying for and then becoming naturalized?
Question 2 & 2a:
Since Hawaii was just a U.S. Territory from 1900 - 1959, where would I look for Hawaiian naturalization records? Is there such a thing?
Question 3:
Does anyone know of any good FREE online resourses for Brooklyn?
A few wee questions

Thanks for that Lesley, looks like there is a good chance he was SOMEWHERE in the States in 1910 since there was a 5 year residency required.

Andy,
You have to be in the USA for five years before applying for citizenship. It then takes about two years for them to process your application. At least that's the way it was for me. Not sure how long it took to process in the early 1900's.
If you are looking for his papers good luck. I sent away for my citizenship application papers last year, and they couldn't find them. Luckily I had kept an application number they had given me, and they were able to find me using the number. They had my name misspelt and had me living in the wrong county. Hopefully they have now corrected my records.

Just had another hunt and James Lynch was living at 26 Stewart Street, San Francisco in 1919.
It appears he was a sailor and travelled a lot. In 1916 he was returning as a passenger from Glasgow, perhaps a visit back home. On the same passenger list is a Harriet Henderson who lived just round the corner from Poplar Street on Fulton Street.

Found out who Mary McCarron was and how she was related.
1930 Census at 11 Poplar Street there are:
John McCarron 55 born Ireland arrived 1910
Mary McCarron 48 born Ireland arrived 1910
Daniel " 22 born Ireland arrived 1910
James " 18 Born NY
Mary " 16 Born NY
Helen 14 Born NY
Anna 10 Born NY
James H. Lynch 29 Born Ireland arrived 1927
Anna Gallacher 16 born Scotland
Found John McCarron arriving in April 3rd 1910 age 35 going to stay with a friend Mrs. William Docherty at 37 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn (around the corner from Poplar Street). He was born in Moville.
Found Mary 28 and Daniel 2 arrived 21 Aug 1910 Mary was born in Derry, Daniel in Donegal. They were going to stay with John at 37 Columbia Heights.
Luckily on the other page Mary gives a contact name of James Gallacher, 10 Argyll Street, Port Glasgow.
In 1901 at 10 Argyll Street we find:
James Gallacher 50 born Donegal
Mary wife 48 born Donegal
Hannah dau 18 born Donegal
John son 16 born Port Glasgow
William Lynch boarder 40 born Donegal
Hannah (can't read surname) relation 5 born Derry
A wee look at John's birth cert from 1884 names the mother Mary LYNCH the parents were married in Ireland in 1877
IGI has the following:
1. Mary Josephene Gallagher - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 31 JUL 1879 Londonderry, Londonderry, Ireland
2. Hannah Elizabeth Gallagher - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 25 DEC 1880 Londonderry, Londonderry, Ireland
No sign of the family in 1891 and no deaths of Mary Gallacher/Lynch in Scotland.
So Mary Lynch was my Great Great Grandfather's sister, William the boarder was actually her brother, I knew of him already. Another full branch to track down!
Could some kind soul have a wee look for the McCarrons in the 1920 census, they should be at 11 Poplar Street but I'm interested to see who else is there.

Hi Jean,
Thanks for that, I won't need the image just the names will do.
I've found an online photo from 1836 of Poplar Street from Willow Street in Brooklyn looking towards Manhattan (What a view!).
My granny would have left before the Chysler and Empire State buildings were started but the photo has 11 Poplar Street so the whole family are delighted.
Thanks again,
Andy

New York databases
Hi Andy,
I have found the following website useful. Don't be put off by the Italian flavour, the databases cover non-Italian immigrants and also include Brooklyn. There are births and marriages and naturalization records. I have found information about my grand uncle John Morrison and his second wife in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. And it's FREE!

Hi Robert,
I stumbled upon that website during the weekend, excellent effort from the production team.
How about this:

The doorway just above the middle of the white cart leads to where my Granny and all her rellies were staying in the 1920's. This photo is from 1936.
