Tarnation
I take it that the Ellis Island search site has been taken over and now instead of spending happy hours searching free of charge I have to pay "Findmypast" for every transcript/image. What a shame - that was the one site I had a good relationship with ie I could actually find people.
My "lost boy" has morphed into John Charles Watkins, having been "adopted" age 13 after 10 years in the Pontypool Workhouse, by a Charles Watkins. He disappears again after 1901 and I envisaged settling down to try the Americas. Oh well, if I had only known that was on the horizon before taking out another month of Ancestry

Never mind, this boy is too important to count the cost - must give husband some nice meals to cushion the blow.

Hi Lorna
The Ellis Island site still seems to be "as was" for me - free search and manifests

Best wishes

Hi Lorna
No problem for me either. Only one John Charles Watkins. Entered USA 21 June 1924, aged 41 years 3 months so right age, resident in Oxton, wife Elsie but alas, born Liverpool.
Lots of just plain John Watkins if you can plough through them all.
Good hunting

Hi Maisie & Lesley
Well, I don't understand that at all but yes, you are right, I am back into Ellis Island as well. Three cheers

and thanks for that.
Regards
Lorna

Hi Maisie
Just a thought. There couldn't have been a misunderstanding over the birthplace could there - writing down Liverpool instead of Pontypool? Clutching at straws again

Hi Lorna
Snap - thought of that myself after I sent the post, but there is a John Charles Watkins born 1883 in West Derby (which is in Liverpool) on FreeBMD.
Looks like back to the drawing board.

Thanks Maisie
Yes, that is it exactly. Maybe Anne could arrange a seance with her Glasgow ghost and see if she would do researches in the afterworld
Bye for now

Happy to oblige, Lorna...after I get my long list of questions answered, of course!
Regards,
