Searching in Iowa Louis Barrow

Post by trish1 » Sat Oct 02, 2010 1:56 am

(Had to start this one again - I am confusing myself between Ohio and Iowa - no idea why, I hope I now have it correct)

I have found an immigrant in Iowa whom I think is probably one of mine - but have no idea where I can look to find more information. So far (from ancestry) I have - a one line immigrant item - Louis Barrow Iowa 1888

I have found him on the 1900 and 1920 Census records.

1900 says born Jan 1863 England, parents from England, arrived in 1885 married to laura 9 years, 1 surviving child Charles born 1899, Farmer
1920 adds that he was nauralised in 1891 (says n/a in 1900census)
I have found son Charles in 1930 still farming in Iowa, but cannot see Louis or Laura.

In England he was registed as Lewis Barrow Mar qtr 1863 - but is on the 1871 and 1881 census records as Louis. No sign after 1881. Born Otham, Kent parents Horace Barrow and Ellen nee Hollands.

It seems most likely the Louis in Iowa is the same person, but any information on where I could look to confirm same much appreciated

Hi Trish,

Is there any sign of a marriage record for him, presumably around 1891?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Trish,
Really too bad it wasn't Ohio! (and it's not just you, many people mix up the states that are mostly vowels  ) Ohio death certs are on Family Search, but Iowa death certs... are like pulling teeth and even then they may not cough them up for you (horrible image-- sorry!).

However, this time YOU ARE IN LUCK :D The Iowa state census in 1925 is full of information. See this old post: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=8729

He was still alive in 1925 and his parents were, indeed, Horace and Ellen Holands. It even gives the parents' marriage location (Maidstone).

Got to run now...

Hi Andrew & Sarah

I assume they married in Iowa, I should have mentioned Laura is on the Census as being born in Illinois with parents born in Ohio (maybe that is where I got the wrong state name) - & I have no idea where to look for a marriage certificate for any US State. It seems, however that Sarah has found the proof needed - how amazing that there is a "state" census - do all the states of US have such a thing? Mind you, they were probably married at Otham - which is, I gather a small settlement in the Maidstone area - but Maidstone is probably more than anyone in the US had heard about.

I really must study ancestry to see what other information they have - I keep searching what I know rather than looking for anything new. Rather silly given that I pay to access the site.

Many thanks Sarah - that mystery was solved very quickly - he may still be living in 1930, I have some trouble finding things on the US census records - probably because I search them very infrequently compared to those in the UK.

Hi Sarah

Sometimes I am a little slow on the uptake - I just checked son Charles on the 1925 Iowa census which gave me his mother's (Louis' wife) maiden name & where they were married - which was Fairfield Iowa. Amazing - I am so pleased to have confirmed all of this. Thanks again.

Trish

Edit: Just found brother Herbert in Iowa also. Slightly numerically challenged, In 1900 says he is 24, born 1866. Says he arrived 1899. In 1930 says he arrived 1887 but he was in England for the 1891 census, so presumably the 1899 may be correct. I can't find him on the 1925, but he may be hiding under a transcript error.

Hi Trish,
In 1925 he is known as "Bort" :D Barrow and was born 1877 in England. He and his wife and children are living in Lockridge, Jefferson County.

Many of the states had censuses in the "5" years between the federal censuses. Not all survive, however, and as far as I am aware, none of the others ask so many wonderful questions as the Iowa 1925. You are really lucky to hit on that one!

Have a look at the Jefferson county GenWeb site. You may find some additional information on this family: http://iagenweb.org/jefferson/

Regards,
Sarah

Thanks again Sarah - that seems to be the same location as 1930 where I notice the son is called Bert. He was born 1876 so much closer than the 1900 date :)
I shall have to start getting some US maps as I have for UK (and Canada with help from TS) - my world geography is increasing - albeit somewhat late in life. My school days (if I remember correctly) covered the "corn belt" and the great lakes. I now have an Iowa favourites list - thanks for the link.

I also found it reality that both of the brothers said they had zero years schooling - yet all those UK census records show "scholar" or "school". The girls in the family were all in service at their first teenage census - probably started at 10. I am related to these folks through their paternal grandmother (somewhat distant) but the family has certainly travelled the world. There are no doubt more US immigrants to be found.
