Greetings all.

A cousin has just sent me some family history info, gleaned from her recent contact with distant Canadian relatives.

I'm glad that the Canadian and New Zealand branches, have kept loose links since our Air Force men trained in Canada during WWII.

No way I would have found "Biso" as being a possible, when searching for distant past "Beausault" family members. The problem with not being bilingual, and having an ear for it.

Hi Alan,
I think we've all found that it helps to attempt to say names out loud with various accents in order to track down spelling variations and here's another good example of that! When I used to teach phonetics I had students who were majoring in theater, music, biology and physics as well as the expected speech pathology, foreign languages and linguistics, but maybe there should be a "phonetics for genealogists" course

Welcome to Canada!

Beausault is a combination of two words. Beau meaning beautiful and pronounced Beau (as in Brummel) and Sault meaning (water)falls, and rhyming (in this case) with beau. The name then would have been pronounced beau-seau.

If the name has come to be pronounced `biso` it has likely been changed with a change in geography - such as migration to Louisiana.

You may find the Drouin Papers helpful in tracing the family and they will likely be Catholic in Québec. If the family was in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island, they may also be in the Drouin Papers, but there may be more likelihood of other religiions being involved due to the British influences and the greater number of Protestant churches.

Past the cut offs for publishing, but can state that a CLARKSON married a BISO in Prince Edward Island, and all children were born in Toronto, Canada.
