James Bertram

Post by frances » Thu Dec 05, 2019 4:45 pm

I have been doing some research on James Bertram who was secretary to Andrew Carnegie.

I have come across the following article in the New York Times dated Nov 1, I am interested in finding out the year this article was written.

Does anyone have access to the New York Times archive

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 1. -- James Bertram, for many years confidential secretary to Andrew Carnegie, and, later, secretary of the Carnegie Corporation, left the residue of his estate, in the event of his daughter's death without heirs, to the Chancellor of the Exchequer of Great Britain

Thank you in advance

Hi Frances,

Looks like the article was published on 02 November 1934.

Hi Andrew, Yes that's what I though but in para 7 of the article refers to an American government valuation of the Bertram estate in 1994. I feel the article must be much later even than 1994, just trying to have definitive proof.

Thanks

Frances

The crux of the estate is that Bertram's will said his estate would go to a trust fund for his wife and daughter. If they died without further issue, the funds would go to repaying the billions that Britain borrowed to finance WW1 before the US joined the effort. In 1999 the remains of the trust fund were valued at $4.5 million and were being fought over by the US Government and a foundation established by his daughter to fund medical and veterinary causes. Britain has stated they have no debts since they defaulted in 1934. The US governments wants the money because their loans were defaulted upon.
