Hi,
Can some kind person tell me if the name MAILLIE appears in any census returns at all ? The family I'm looking for left Scotland around 1920.
Mother's name: Sarah Maillie
Children: Mary Sneddon Smith Maillie, b. 1905
Helen Maillie, b., 1906
Andrew Armour Maillie, b., 1909
Robert Armour Maillie, b., 1911
Margaret Galbraith Maillie, b., 1919
Agnes Stewart Maillie, b., 1920
They were probably living with Sarah's mother, Mary Galbraith.
Thank you.

Hi SusieQ
...and welcome to Talking Scot.
There do seem to be some Maillies in America - a look at the U.S. Social Security Death Index on the LDS site www.familysearch.org , click on search then U.S. Social Security Death Index reveals 45 Maillies. Hope this helps.
Best wishes

Hi Susie
I hope to have census access in another day or two and will let you know if I find anything interesting. A check on immigration shows a MAILLIE family coming through Philly in 1921 but the names don't seem to line up with your list. This lot consisted of:
Mary age 45
Sarah age 18
Thomas age 15
Maggie age 9
Frank age 7
Alexander age 6
Ann age 3
The kids all born Barrhead and Mary born Wishaw.
Best wishes

Are there any Mailies in America ?
Hello Lesley and Jean,
Thank you for your efforts on my behalf. My Maillies originated in Bathgate, guess I should have said that at the beginning ! You know how you get carried away whilst typing ? I'll wait to hear if they turn up in any census, thanks again.
Regards

You may find your family in the 1901 census (the most recent one available in the UK)- you can search on Scotlands People (link at top of page) Unfortunately the births you mention are all after this date - however, Sarah Maillie may be there and her mother Mary Galbraith. If you know it is the Bathgate area you are searching this should make things a little easier.
You could also try a search for Sarah's marriage.
Best wishes

Are there any Maillies in America ?
Lesley,
I have the Maillies in Scotland. Perhaps I should have explained more fully. Sarah was married to my Great Uncle Robert in Bathgate in 1904. While he was serving in the Army during the Great War, rumour has it that she found another man. He had not been discharged when she left Scotland in 1920, taking all the children with her to America. He never saw or heard of his children again. There was a report in the Bathgate Courier of the marriage of his eldest daughter, Mary in October, 1927, in Raleigh, West Virginia. I haven't been able to confirm this.
I got this info. from a copy of his petition for divorce in 1930. I'm really curious to find out what happened to the Maillies in America. That's what genealogy is all about, really isn't it? Nosey Parkers, all of us !

Hi Susie
Sorry, wasn't aware you'd already seen the UK census info - guess I should have perhaps worked this out from the fact you'd posted in "The Amercias" !
Best wishes

Hi Susie
So far I'm striking out with the 1930 Census. But the reasons are mostly my own . I wasn't aware that the census I was getting access to did not have a complete name indexing in place for the year 1930. Some states are are done but far from all and West Virginia ain't one of 'em! Hmmmm.....I can search all the images though and have scanned quite a bit of Raleigh, WV 1930 census but so far have seen no evidence of MAILLIE or similar. No GALBRAITH yet either. I wonder if you know who daughter Mary supposedly married in 1927??? I'll be happy to keep looking but will need some further clues or locations. Maybe if you obtained a copy of the MC it would help you.
Not giving up but temporarily stalled........
Best wishes

Thanks Jean, unfortunately, I don't have anything else to offer. The info. about the marriage came from a transcript of the divorce proceedings. It was evidence offered by Robert's sisters, who had read of the marriage in their local paper. No details were given. Stalled........but not giving up !

Re: Are there any Maillies in America ? .....
I know this post comes a few years after the initial question, but in case you are still interested:
Yes, there are Maillie's in America (I am one of them). My grandfather was Michael Maillie who came to the U.S. from the Glasgow area of Scotland and settled in the Philadelphia area. I do believe there was a Sarah Maillie somewhere in our family tree as well. My father actually has an entire genealogy written down somewhere - I just have to find it (he passed away last year).
My husband and I vacationed in Scotland about 5 years ago and were able to meet up with some of my Dad's cousins who are still there (near Glasgow).
There are still quite a few Maillie's in the Philly area (I have a few cousins there, as well as some distant relatives (some of my Dad's cousins and their families)).
Let me know if you are still interested in this topic and I can do some family research - we may be distantly related!
