LIVINGSTON
I'm trying to find any information on the Livingston family that left Kirkcudbright in 1859 on board the "British Queen' for New Zealand. Isabella and her brother James Livingston were on this boat. Then in 1864 on board the "Nelson ' most of the rest of the family also moved to NZ, they were Margaret and brother Peter Livingston, their mother Janet Livingston (nee Kelly). Only one sister stayed in Scotland, Janet who married John Sproat. Can any one help or point me in the right direction for searching.
Thanks
Sarah

Hello Sarah,
The web page at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/us ... index.html and its links to other pages, contains much information about the Livingstone’s, even living people, which would not be available elsewhere. It’s the sort of site, with photographs and so on, that most just dream about finding.
It may be worthwhile contacting the author of the site to find out what sort of research he has done into the Scottish side. It looks as though this was done before the internet became of much use and may have involved much actual leg-work in Scotland rather than the on-line variety. He may have extra info which could give clues as to which direction you, or those assisting you, could head.
If you have all the New Zealand information, including notes, in a family history program on your computer you will have a better idea of where the gaps are that you want to fill.
As far I know, NZ BMD records aren’t yet available online although I remember reading somewhere that something similar to the ScotlandsPeople site was being planned, but that may have been just a rumour.
You could look for family events reported or advertised in local newspapers, although the author of the Livingston site may already have covered these. If not, you could try http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/browse.html
If you run into brick walls in NZ try NSW BDM or other Australian sites as a lot of New Zealander’s end up here. http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
For general information as to New Zealand research, and many more good links, this site is quite comprehensive http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/node/4112
Hope this helps,
Alan
