New Zealand death certificate?

Post by annie1 » Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:17 pm

Hi,

I want to order a death certificate for my mothers gt aunt Mary Ann Skinner ( nee Murray) who died in Masterton New Zealand 1931, I found a record of her death on the Masterton Council Grave site a few years ago, I went round in circles for a while,as her age was always out, but I am now certain it was her and that she had lied about her age, fingers crossed though!!

My questions are:

What information is on the certificate? is it the same as Scottish records?
How do I pay? as I'd rather not pay by credit card.

I went to the New Zealand Gov site but could not find the answers and just wondered if anyone else had ordered from them before.

Thanks
Ann

Hello Ann

I can tell you that all that is on a death certificate in 1971 is the deceased name and date and where they died.
The one i have a copy of must have been sent to my grandma at the time and so i havnt had to order one from NZ.

This site might be of some help though.

Not sure if this link is similar to the ones from Tracey - but it also seems to have some information

Hello Ann,

See this page – hopefully it is up to date.

NZ certificates appear to have a lot of detail but it seems you must ask for a full certificate

Hi Ann

Just been having a read of the replies to your email request. There is a bit of misinformation in the responses.

This is my understanding. There are two kinds of certificate available in NZ - a certificate (which is used for legal purposes) and a photocopy of the original birth, death or marriage entry. I'm a researcher based in NZ. If I was getting this cert for genie purposes I'd ask for the photocopy of the original death entry, cause it has more information than is on the legal certificate. The photocopy contains all that Mommat listed in her response. The cost for a 1931 photocopy is NZ $20 (about 6 or 7 pounds sterling). Hope this helps.

I'm currently researching Sutherland, Davidson, Baillie (Kilsyth), Wilson (Dunoon), Paton (Dunoonn) in Scotland.

Just thought I would throw this in for what it's worth......

I sent for New Zealand Death cert for my 3 x Gt grandfather who died in 1858 in Wellington. It is called a "New Zealand Death Certificate" and states it is a "certified copy of particulars recorded by a Registrar". Although there is a lot of details asked for, many of the lines have "Not Recorded" beside them and so it was disapointing not to have as much information as there was potential for. Hopefully that would not be the case with one so much later as the one you are looking for.

Anyway,
All the best
Barbara

Hi Barbara and Fiona,

I have just noticed your replies and thank you both, I have found another two who seemingly went to New Zealand from the same family, so the chances are they possibly helped with the death cert, I am going to wait and gather as much info about the other two and order photocopies of the originals.

Thanks
Ann
