Yarralumla ACT?

Post by speleobat2 » Sun Nov 25, 2007 2:59 pm

Came across a submitter on the IGI whose address was Yarralumla, ACT.

Is this in AU? If not, any idea where it might be?

Hi Carol,

A quick google-map search gives the following...

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?oe=UTF-8& ... Yarralumla

ACT = Australian Capital Territory - the small state including Canberra. Yarralumla seems to be a suburb of Canberra.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks Andrew,

I knew that I had heard of ACT before, but when I looked in my atlas which is pretty old and not that good, I didn't see ACT anywhere. When I looked after I read your answer, I found it but it's so small in my atlas that you almost need a magnifying glass!

Yarralumla is a suburb of Canberra, ACT, situated about 3klm from the city centre, on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. Government House is also named "Yarralumla"

There are at least 30 Embassies & High Commissions in the suburb of Yarralumla, British, Canadian, Russian & USA, to name a few.

Thanks Kathy,

Now I'm more curious than before as to who the submitter is! I guess the first thing would be to find out the date of the submission to see if it is current or not. If it's twenty years old, the address probably isn't any good any more.

Hi Carol

Check the submitter against the white pages

www.whitepages.com.au

I have found some early submissions on the ancestral files where the folks are still at the same address. Canberra may be slightly different, given that folks may come and go with government changes.

Trish,

That was brillant! She's there! It even gave her phone number. If I had a lot of nerve, I could call her! :o

I'll add this to my letter's to write list.

I find a phone call is a good idea - you have to talk quickly or else they hang up thinking you are selling something but once past that - it can work. I have contacted 2 folks this way - one has become a very good friend.

If you can't decide to call (must admit my first call took me weeks to make) I don't mind trying for you - pm the details if you think I can help.

Thanks Trish,

Right now I'm waiting for some information from Scotland to get a better idea if the person I'm hunting is even a member of my branch of the family. I haven't been able to plug him into any of the groups that I know about yet so he's still on my list of "possibles". I'll keep your offer in mind! :)
