Hello all,
I notice that Ancestry have posted the above database online, however unlike previous Australian related additions to the site, this new set of information is denied to me with my paltry UK Subscription. Is there anyone out there with a World Subscription who might be able to check out the first John Wishart listed (not the one with the alias Joseph Wiseman) in case there is anything new to add to the rather healthy amount information I've already gathered from various Australian convict records. Many thanks in advance,
Scott

Hi Scott
Ancestry have changed how Oz data is now available (it may relate to the WDYTYA now on in Oz with Ancestry sponsership)
I had a number of emails with the UK ancestry as to "how can you change what is available AFTER I have paid" & ended up getting a refund for my unexpired UK sub & I joined ancestry.au which gives all the Oz and some UK data (not sure if there is some UK data I can't access, but I get the census & BDM data - which is all I use anyway)
Thus said
I cannot find the exact data base you are discussing - I will keep looking. - just found it

John Wishart Vidi Westgarth John
I'm looking for the headings - the second John is in a column where most folks have the term of conviction
The data base is described on page 1 (where I went looking for headings)
Public Records office London - Colonial Office Ref CO 207/1
NSW Entry books of Correspondence No 1
The only heading I can find is
Name Where Convicted When Time which doesn't quite fit with the information for John Wishart, but does fit with most others!
Trish
Edit: could it be an alias - there is a John Westgarth
15 sep 1788 - 2nd or 3rd fleeter presumably
Convicted Location: Newcastle (Tyne)
7 years
I now have the latin expert in the family looking for vidi, vidu or vide - I'm not sure the word is vidi - but probably is.
vidi - past tense - you have seen, they saw, we have seen

Hi Trish,
Where did you finally find the database? I don't seem to have it even with my supposed "World Deluxe Membership"
Scott, this from the Ancestry site explains why you can't get it, but not why I can't...
Note: At one time, Ancestry had older subscription plans (U.S. Records Collection, United Kingdom & Ireland Records Collection, Historical Newspaper Collection, etc.), which some users may have continued to renew, rather than changing to our new, simplified subscriptions. Because the old plans have not been updated since the simplified plans were introduced, those keeping the old plans will not be able to view any new databases added to Ancestry. They will still be able to view databases that already existed, including updates within those specific databases.
Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
The comment is interesting - but not quite true. I did have an older UK subscription BUT it wasn't ONLY the new data bases I couldn't access - some of the older ones that I used to have access to, suddenly disappeared.
To find the convict data base I went to ancestry.com.au
Selected 'Search" at top which gave the map of Australia (select Australia if you are in ancestry.com)
Clicked on NSW
And it is in the list headed Australia Historical Records
It did take awhile to find, not instantly visible

Hi Sarah - all the ancestry sites accept the same passwords
can be useful. I went to Oz today & the data base is now on the front screen - it is as if they heard us say we couldn't find it.
Where the Cameroon comes from is beyond me but there are a number of records which include the vidi/vide in the location item & and they all have a name rather than a date and sentence - there appear to be 14 of them - I checked a couple more & they also have Cameroon in the location - must be an interesting data base link
There seem to be some very different documents making up this data base (look at the other John Wiseman)

Vidi Cameroon is a place in the African country of Cameroon...

Could John have been convicted there - perhaps in a military court martial - and sentenced to transportation?

Hi All,
many thanks for taking the time to have a peek at the other John for me. As you point out, it's not my man, but yet another black sheep of the surname!
Thanks again,
Scott
