Hello Maggie,
Not a very common name. There isn’t much Joseph Hurren happening in New South Wales except for a death, parents Joseph and Rebecca. http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
2369/1943 HURREN, ETTY AMELIA, JOSEPH, REBECCA, GRAFTON
Can’t see a Hurren arrival in Queensland however there’s at least a death there 1911, Parents George and Alice. http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/829.htm
1911/C4759, Hurren Joseph Henry, George Francis Hurren, Alice Elizabeth McGowan
For Victoria, if you search for Hurren in the Unassisted Immigration list you’ll find a Jos Hurren age 37 arrived Victoria 1866 on the Great Britain.

If you check the Victoria BDMs and search for his full name there with all the boxes ticked in the range 1853-1985 you’ll see there's been a fair bit of Joseph Hurren activity suggesting maybe that’s where he ended up. If he otherwise fits the 1866 arrival maybe he switched ships somewhere.

If you’re chasing his family a search for his name in the Australian Archives will bring up some records of possible descendants. http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx
Hope this helps,
Alan
