National Library of Australia – Online Databases

Post by Currie » Tue Sep 30, 2008 3:13 am

National Library of Australia.

Access to free databases from home.

News arrived this morning from the Society of Australian Genealogists that the National Library of Australia has a huge list of 60 databases available to home users. They must be residents of Australia.

These include House of Commons Parliamentary Papers, 19th Century British Library Newspapers, the Times Digital Archive [1785-1985] and a ton of other stuff I’m not very familiar with.

It all seems too good to be true and I'll believe it when I get my library card and try it out.

Click on Licenced Resources, you'll see British Library Newspapers, for example, on Page 6. See the Get a Library Card link at top right. http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/

Get yours,
Alan

Hi Alan,
That does indeed sound too good to be true. Let us know if it works. :-k  Our neighbours here in France are residents of Australia... you don't suppose...? :!:

Cheers,
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

You never know with these things.

They’ll be posting the library card to me so I’ll see if it’s as good as it looks when it arrives and let you know.

All the best,
Alan

Hello Sarah/Alan

It's certainly not too good to be true - I received my card a few days ago. My trouble is working out what may be where - just so much information.

Cards will only be sent to residential Australian addresses. I assume if one has a home address here it could be used. I would guess that the cards will only work from within Australia (in a similar fashion to not being able to watch BBC videos when in Australia), but I could be wrong.

I believe some libraries in UK have similar systems - the data bases available seem to vary between libraries.
