Buchanan, John Robert

Any information please please, (or how to find it) on my Great Grandparents. John Robert Buchanan born Loch Lomond married in Victoria, Australia, 1874 Mary Hartlo/Hartlowe/Hartle born Cork, Ireland. Went on to have 3 children, John George, James and Elizabeth.
Help as I have no hair left! New at this very addictive lark.

Hi Kath
..and welcome to Talking Scot :D
Do Australian marriage entries of that period give any indication as to parents of the bride and groom?

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley for the prompt response. I do have the certificate of marriage for John Robert's son John Geoge Buchanan and Catherine Mahon 1910 in New Zealand. The fathers well, that has not been confirmed, hence my difficulty if you know what I mean

The victorian marriage index
Buchanan John Robert maried Mary HARTLO 1874 ref 332 which includes the birth places you have given - can be used to purchase the certificate image online for $AU17.50

http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/CA2574 ... ch~&2=~&3=~
(Images and certificates link)

The certificate should provide the parent names for both of the couples, occupation of groom & male parents and hopefully the ages of the couple, so it may be easier to find the birth of John Robert and perhaps some census records. I have no experience with researching in Ireland, so am unsure about tracing Mary. Even with parent names from certificates I have been unable to trace my own Irish folks.

The marriage index
Buchanan John Robert maried Mary HARTLO 1874 ref 332
Children
Elizabeth John Robert and Mary Hartle place kera 1878/3495
James John Robert and Mary Hartle place Durh 1876/15659
John George John Robert and Mary Hartle place Kera 1875/3142

Not sure if this is your man (marriage cert would confirm), but I find a death
BUCHANAN Jno Robt parents Geo Buchanan and Eliz Jane Stewart age 78 Cheltnam 1919 ref 1142

I don't easily find a death for Mary - there is one at Cheltnam in 1921 - aged 74 with unknown parents - this would be possible, if she died in Australia - but there are many Mary Buchanans with unknown parents in the death indexes.

Since my last post I have sourced the 1874 Marriage cert for John Robert and Mary nee Hartle/o Buchanan. Also the 1919 Death record of John Robert in the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum. I do not have the record for Mary yet but i also think 1921 sounds about right. Need to confirm that.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Kath

Although a little expensive, Oz certificates can be useful - as the informant obviously didn't know the parents of the Mary who died in 1921, I'm not sure that there would be much additional/useful information on this certificate - although it could list her children and detail of her death.

Did the 1874 marriage help to find John Robert back in Scotland? or the death certificate help with the immigration records? There may be some information on the Asylum at Vic State records - but not sure that you could get any further detail - such records are often closed for 100 years - then again, it was probably a private/church asylum - google may find more information.

Wills are also available from State records - could be worth browsing the PROV site

There are a couple of records for wills for Mary Buchanans who died 1921
