Australian death certificates

Post by chickcorbybred » Sat Dec 05, 2009 9:29 pm

Hi everyone, can anyone help, I would like a copy of the death certificate for James Mathew's a tobacconist from Daylesford, Victoria who I believe died there in 1906. Any help would be appreciated.
sincerely Chick Mathew

Hi Chick

Have you had a search here to see if it shows up?

Best wishes

This is the index record for your man

Mathews Jas Parents Mathews Alex and Margt ROBERTSON aged 75 Dford 1906 ref 5078

Lesley's link goes to the index search - if you use this link with the reference number 5078
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/i ... eCertImage

you can download the certificate image for $AU17.50 currently about 10 pounds. This is the cheapest way to get the details - which is expensive compared to SP - but Oz certificates are very informative - similar to 1855 from Scotland. (They still shouldn't cost this much - I can currently buy about 8 certificates from SP for the same price  )

=D> Thanks Trish, this is definitely my gt gt uncle, most of the family were seamen and travelled the world. We just don't know where half of them ended up settling, some are in SA, USA and Australia. I don't think the family kept records of where everyone lived as there are still a few missing, my gt grandfather was a ships carpenter and was in NSW in the mid 1870s but returned home but I don't know if he stayed on the same ship or stayed for any length of time.
Anyway thanks for the information as there is nothing about James on Scotlands People it is very much appreciated.
gratefully yours Chick Mathew =D>

I forgot to mention that Victorian wills for that time are also online - there is one for a James Mathews in 1906 - but it doesn't seem like your man - the place where the man who made the will died is a 6 hour drive away - but I can't reconcile the will to any other James Mathews who died in 1906 (there are a couple) so it's a little weird. In case you find any other Uncles in Victoria - this is the link

If you check here http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/publi ... ide023.jsp this lists the online data at the PRO Victoria (archives)

Hi Dennis

Unfortunately virtually none from govt sources (to my knowledge, which may be out of date) - they have no bdms online - but do have access to same via a transcription service somewhat cheaper than buying a certificate. There are also very expensive CDs available that index BDMs - as I don't have any family that settled in SA, I don't have a copy

If you are looking for specific folks I could check on one of my intermittant library visits - or someone else may have access to the CDs.

The State Library may assist you

or the archives
