George & Elizabeth Graham Canberra 1962

Post by scottanderson66 » Sun Jun 23, 2013 11:40 pm

Hi guys, trish etc

not been on for a while due to ill health but I hope someone can help although it's a long shot.

I am helping a woman find her birth mother whom she has been trying to find for many years, I have done her ancestry here in Scotland and found the she went on the assisted passage scheme to Canberra in November 1962 see text below from the National Archives of Australia, I have sent an email to Joy Murrin like I did last year when looking for my Uncle Edward Greig along with help from you guys.

A1877 14/11/1962 ORION GRAHAM G GRAHAM George born 2 March 1935; Elizabeth Wilson (nee Black) born 29 March 1931; travelled per ORION departing UK on 14 November 1962 under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme
Access status: Not yet examined Location: Canberra

This is definitely them although it is George Graham and Elizabeth Wilson Graham nee Black as I have a copy of birth and marriage certificates and they match up.

It would appear in the text above they were not married but this is not the case and think it is maybe a typo.

I have applied for access to the file to see if it holds any more information.

Could someone please advise of any other leads I could follow up to see where they ended up ? if still alive ? any family members ? or if as a £10 pom bailed out and returned home, although there seems to be no records of them back here in Scotland or the UK.

Thanks guys,

Scott

Probably outside of the range of TalkingScot re dates/ages - but a couple of general things.

- the information from the immigration record should tell you where they planned to settle in Australia. All of the immigration summaries from post WWII on the oz archives site look similar - the given name/s and maiden name of spouse, the given names of children - the surname is not repeated.

I've looked in a couple of likely places - don't see them. No obvious sign on the online electoral rolls (could indicate South Australia as they have none online) - In 1962 folks from the UK could enrol to vote - no citizenship required. Then again, despite voting is compulsory - if you don't enrol - you don't have to vote.

Hello Scott,

The Orion arrived at Sydney on 19 December, 1962, but it seems it called at Fremantle, Adelaide, and Melbourne, on the way.

There’s more information about this couple here.

If still alive, and still in Australia, the odds are that they would be receiving an Australian Government Age Pension. Also probably receiving a UK Age Pension because of contributions paid there.

Many years ago the Australian pension department had a system whereby an unsealed letter to the person, plus a covering letter, could be sent to them which they would then forward on if they had a record. But they wouldn’t tell you the persons address, or even if the letter had been forwarded anywhere, because that would breach confidentially. It was up to the person to respond if they wished to. I have forgotten the details and don’t know if the system still operates but there’s something about it here. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/t ... 1273816038

Hope that helps,

Sorry I can't think of any suggestions - I assume you've tried searching for any other relatives - did their parents die in Scotland - would there be any obits giving addresses for thecouple. I double checked the WA 1980 electoral rolls - but don't find them - which brings me back to SA. The SA library may have some information - although most old rolls are not indexed by name. They may, however have something on the business??
