Hi all
I'm out of my depth here! I'm now trying to find a "lost" relative, last heard of in 1885 in Scotland, who may have ended up in Australia.
I found an Alexander McNicol on http://www.awm.gov.au/database/nroll.asp
who is the father of two Mcnicol boys from Strathdownie, Victoria who were killed in WW1 - their given names are both names associated with this family: William and James.
How do I go about finding a death record for their father Alexander? I hope this would give his parents' names and prove if he was/wasn't the Alexander I'm looking for, who was born 3 February 1864 in Glasgow to Daniel and Susan (Davie) McNicol.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Lesley
I am not sure of the costs involved with this online search facility, as I have never had the need to use it.
The following URL is the BMD section of Justice Victoria, and it will take a bit of clicking through to get to the search area you want.
http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servlet/bdm_home
I hope this is of some help, most of the states have facilities through their respective Dept's of Justice who manage all civil registrations.

Hi Stew
Thanks for the link. I've had a look and shellled out to see the results of some BMD searches but nothing in the death indexes is jumping out at me. I was contacted by some very helpful folk from Australia via another notice board (!) and from what one of them has found it would appear this Alexander McNicol (the father of the above mentioned boys)who married Hannah Neaves in Victoria in 1885 was born in Rifledowns (I'm guessing thats somewhere is Australia? As far as I know its not in Glasgow!!). So given this info it is beginning to look like he's not one of my lot. I gather the only way to know for sure would be to download his marriage for AUS $17.50 which apparently will tell me his parents names and where he was born. I'm dithering over this as I have next to no evidence that he is the one I'm looking for, and it seems a bit extravagant for a hunch I don't feel too convinced about!
Thanks for your help
Best wishes

Glad to be of assistance Lesley
Just a pity that the documents are a bit expensive, especially if it is only speculated that it is one of your long lost deid punters
