Update to BMD sites in Australia .....
Hello All
I thought I would update the url's I previously posted for family history in Australia.
Some of the sites allow online searching for a fee, others such as the Northern Territory only appear to have microfiche fecords, there availability elsewhere is unknown.
I have no idea as to what fees are charged.

A little more information on the states
NSW has free indexes online - follow the family history links (check out the transcription service for the cheapest registration details)
Victoria has pay to view online - indexes inexpensive - a certificate $17.50 - about 6 pounds (same as England/Wales certificate but contains much more information)
Tasmania - useful pre 1900 information via the archives site
http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/genealres/default.htm
WA - online BDM indexes to 1905 use Family history link
SA - I know nothing about what they have
NT - Nothing online & they charged me $AU41 to tell me there was no record of the person I was looking for.
Qld - nothing online. Brisbane Cemeteries are online at
http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/BCC:STAN ... :pc=PC_899
In Australia, all the indexes are available at LDS Centres. They could be available also in UK - or presumably could be ordered.

Thanks Trish for adding that information.
I havent used the sites myself so I had no idea of the costs.
The AVRI is available to purchase through LDS, unfortunately due to contractual obligations not here in Aust.

Hi Lesley - exactly the same - I received a beautiful certificate telling me my person did not die in their state (but I KNOW HE DID - he just kept changing his name - when I find him I will tell them they OWE ME).lbathgate wrote:Hi TrishOuch! I dread to think what they'd charge if they did find someone!!NT - Nothing online & they charged me $AU41 to tell me there was no record of the person I was looking for.
Best wishes

Re the AVRI - It costs $9 US and about 7 pounds in UK - no wonder they aren't allowed to sell it in AUstralia - each individual state charges at least 10 times that amount for its index cds/fiche. It covers WA NSW VIC and TAS - mainly for 1800s.

Greetings Folks!
At the risk of sounding ignorant, but what exactly does the AVRI cover? and where can I get it? I have been trying to find an ancestor who went to Australia around 1870 but with no luck so far. Maybe this could help. Thanks for the updates Stew - have followed some of your advice previously, but to no avail in finding the elusive ones!
Happy New year to you all
