Hugh,
If you have a direct connection with Gilbert you could request a copy of his service records which may shed more light on him?
Australian Service Records are intact & available for a modest fee.
Regards
Jim

There is a Gilbert Mackenzie Steveley aged 0 buried with two other babes in the Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane. Buried 11/12/1946. Despite the spelling, the name seems too similar to dismiss. (It seems a little strange however that the 3 children in the grave were all buried on the same day
)

I did check Toowoomba Cemetery without success

Because of the crazy laws here, births post 1918 in Qld are not easily available. Marriage records are available until about 1939 but post 1914 are only available on fiche. These are at libraries and LDS centres - in 4 year blocks - searching can take awhile. Deaths are similar - hence the Cemetery searching is very useful.
There are a couple of private crematoriums in Brisbane who do not have online records. If you cannot find your folk any other way this is a possibility.
I'll browse a little more
Trish
There is also an Anne Jane Stevely buried 4 May 1954 aged 73 at Balmoral Cemetery. It could be worth looking for a death/funeral notice if you think this may be a relative.
The grave search is a little annoying as you have to put at least 1 letter in the given name - so I'll leave you to check through the alphabet
