I'm trying to trace a relative who went to Australia in 1951.
I've found his immigration application on the NAA website, but I've no idea where he is living today.
His name is Robert Patterson and he was born in Glasgow in 1949.
His last known address was 71 Warraba Rd, Narrabeen back in 1959.
I'd appreciate any help in trying to trace him.

Hi Caroline
Narrabeen is a Northern Sydney beaches surburb. Like in many cities, Sydney folk tend to stay in particular areas, so your man may still be in this area. If you use www.multimap.com you can find the names of surrounding surburbs.
Presumably he came to Australia with his parents. This is a list of burials/funerals in the SMH post 1970. If you can find one of the family on this list - they do have a lookup service if you have no access to the papers
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/dpsindex.htm The notice may list family members and indicate a location for the family.
The australian white pages
http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/resSearch.jhtml (search NSW metropolitan) may then give some clues.
The Telegraph - another Sydney newspaper, has a column for "finding folks". I can't remember what it is called (I don't live in Sydney) but the newspaper is online at
http://www.dailytelegraph.news.com.au/
I just found this that had been added to another query
The column in the Daily Telegraph in Sydney is called "In Search".

Hi Trish,
Just to sat thanks very much for your suggestions.
I've now located Narrabeen and looked up the phone book index, but unfortunately there are over 30 R. Pattersons and none appear to stay in Narrabeen or the surrounding suburbs,
Also tried the newspaper burial index, but no luck there either I'm afraid. I'm pretty sure his parents, Robert Muirhead Patterson and Christina Mckenzie Strang, are no longer living but maybe they did move away - who knows!
Undeterred I've sent an email to the Daily Telegraph and also to the SMH which has a feature called RSVP where you can place genealogy enquiries, so I'll just need to wait and see if I get any replies.
Thanks again for your help though Trish and if you think of anything else let me know.

Thanks for trying.

Because of the so called "privacy" laws in Australia, it is difficult to get BDM information for recent events (in the case of Births, they are locked after c. 1920 in every state). Deaths past 1975 in NSW are unavailable for easy access. There are electoral rolls available, and if your folks enrolled to vote (although it is compulsory to vote, if you do not enrol, you do not vote) it may be possible to trace them. The rolls are listed by electorate, so if they moved alot would be difficult. Also the rolls are mainly in archives/libraries in capital cities, but not on the internet.
Given the age of Robert Jnr, he would have been in the age group for conscription, which was introduced during the 1960s, because of the VN War. This may be a possible way to trace him.
It is possible (perhaps not probable) that Robert's parents are still alive, my inlaws are still with us & my husband was born 1949.
With some difficulty (the site is not working too well at the minute - grr) I browsed the white pages. The R Patterson at the RSL retirement village, Collaroy, could be a possibility for Robert Snr. There is an R & C at Liverpool - a long way from the beach.

Hi Trish,
Thanks for your help once agai
Just wondered where would I find the rcords relating to conscription ?
I was told that his mother died , quite young ,and that the father was dead too. However the person that gave me this info is on holiday in America at the moment so I'll need to wait till he gets back so I can ascertain how sure he was about this. That is why I had discounted R. Patterson in the retirement home.
The search goes on !
