I am looking for any Baillie/Baillie born in the Glasgow and Hamilton areas of Lanarkshire.Hugh Baillie came to Australia in 1838.He was born around 1819.His parents are listed as John Baillie and Doherty / Dorothy McKay.I have since learnt that maybe his father was also a Hugh.

Baillie/Bailey in Glasgow
still waiting for details of my John Baillie from Glasgow. I have found two Hugh Baillie's but not the same parentage. One is a Hugh Baillie born Hamilton 25/10/1818 but parents are James Baillie/Margaret Riddle or Hugh Baillie born Rogart 28/03/1816 parents William Baillie/Janet MacKay. Was your Hugh Baillie already married when he arrived in Australia? Have found two marriages in Glasgow. Hugh Baillie/Elizabeth Davidson married 11/01/1835 and Hugh Baillie/Elizabeth May married 14/05/1837. Hopefully I will get the information I want from the Glasgow Archivist this week and will relay it to you.rachel

I am unaware of any marriage, but that does not mean he was not. I too am wailting for info from the Glen Innes Historical Society. I found his record of trial at the ScotlandAchives.It states that he lived at NEW Vennel when he went to trial at the Glasgow Courts in January,1838. His Certificate of Freedom (NSW Achives) states that he was born in 1819. When was your John born? The children born to Hugh are named as follows-- John, George, Margaret,Mary, Ellen and Hannah (after his wife Hannah). There are still children unaccounted for according to his death certificate.

Baillie/Baileys Glasgow
Hello again Kerry. I have finally got the reply I was waiting for and I'm afraid it is no help,contains less information than what I already have.You asked for my John Baillie's date of birth, I do not know for certain but he died in 1857 and his death certificate showed him to be 34 which would make is date of birth as 1823. Have no trace of any brothers or sisters but he named his three living children, John,Mary and Charles.
Sorry I have been unable to give you more information. I have found my early Baillies elusive but will not give up.
