Ramage's from Fossoway Tulliebole Kinross Scotland .....

Post by Glenys Kirby » Wed Mar 08, 2006 8:57 pm

Trying to find the names of Thomas and Margaret Ramage's children who sailed with their parents on the Storm Cloud to New Zealand in 1860
The only listing I have is Thomas and Margaret, 3 sons and 3 daughters
I hae been able to confirm 4 of the names
John
Margaret
Isabella
Robert
Anne
I think the other two may have been Sarah and Thomas?
Can anyone help

Hi Gleyns
..and a warm welcome to TalkingScot. :D

Have you any idea of the ages of the children, or Margaret's maiden name? There is an Isabella Ramage on the IGI born 06 January 1856 at Balingry, Fife, Scotland - which is not that far from Fossoway&Tulliebole, Kinross. Her mother's name is given as Margaret Hugarty.

Another angle might be to check the 1851 census for the couple and their children (on Scotlands People web site - link at top of page) - given the number of children you have mentioned some of them must have been around at that date. Do you know when your Margaret and Thomas married? Were their ages given at all on the record you have seen?

Sorry, lots of questions but just trying to pin them down a bit!

Best wishes
Lesley

Thomas and Margaret RAMAGE nee GORMAN - HUGARTY?

Post by Glenys Kirby » Sat Oct 07, 2006 8:43 pm

Hi Lesley
Margaret Gorman married Thomas Ramage 17th April 1849 Dunfirmline
Isabella Ramage b 6th January 1856 mothers maiden name Hugarty
is one of our lot and her birth was the only one to record mothers maiden name as Hugarty the rest have Gorman as maiden name. This is creating quite a mystery

Children of Thomas and Margaret Ramage nee Gorman
Born in Scotland

John Ramage b 9 Dec 1849 (Great grandfather) no record of birth Dunfirmline
Margaret Ramage born about 1851 Fifeshire
Thomas Ramage born about 1853
Sarah Ramage born about 1855
Isabella Ramage born 16th January 1856
Robert William Ramage born 29th April 1859 Bickram Villiage Saline Fife

The family emigrated to NZ on the Storm Cloud 1860 and are listed as Thomas Ramage, wife, 3 sons, 3 daughters.
More children were born in NZ and when Isabella died she was with her youngest sister Helen and on her death certificate is mothers maiden name Hugarty all other marriage and death certificates of other siblings have Gorman as maiden name

We are holding a reunion in Napier NZ 19th - 21st Jan 2007 although it is a long way from Dunedin where the Ramage's settled not many live in the South Island as they migrated North

Hi Glenys,
I found the birth of Isobella Ramage father Thomas Ramage mother Margaret Hugarty 6 Jan 1856 Balingry Fife on the LDS Family Search. This matches up with the entry on Scotlands People except you have to type in Isabella not Isobella .Have you viewed the record to be sure it is yours?
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH

Hi there
yes we have checked Isabella is the only one that records mothers maiden name as Hugerty and she is one of ours. A descendant on her side and I live near each other and have been working on the family tree together. She was brought up as the child of Thomas and Margaret Ramage nee Gorman and came out on the Storm Cloud with that family in 1860 It is a real mystery as to where the Hugarty comes in maybe an illegitimate child of Thomas's or perhaps Margaret had been married before.
Thankyou for your response Glenys
