ELBORN from Glasgow Lanarkshire to Australia .....

Post by Kymbo » Thu May 25, 2006 3:56 am

Hi Everyone

I'm a newbie here & am very vague on areas in Scotland.

My research at the moment is on my GG grandfather THOMAS ELBORN.

He appears on the 1841 census at home with his family, aged 11.

There is also a THOMAS ELBORN living as a lodger, single & a potters kiln man in the 1851 census.

The first reference I have of him in Australia is from the birth of his daughter in Traralgon Creek, Victoria in 1858. She being HANNAH ELBORN. Mother stated as CATHERINE ?. I am assuming Catherine may have died shortly after Hannah's birth, but would love to know her surname, otherwise any research on her stops right there.
Then THOMAS ELBORN & MARGARET FITZGERALD have a son JOHN THOMAS ELBORN in 1864.
I don't think Thomas ever married either of these ladies, as there are no records to be founds anywhere. Even thought on Hannah's birth registration it states Thomas & Catherine married 1856, & on John Thomas's birth registration it states Thomas & Margaret married 1856.
Then I thought Catherine & Margaret may be the very same person, but no records anywhere of this with any combination.
Death certificate of Thomas only states father as Samuel & born Glasgow Scotland, most other entries are "unknown"
Anyway back to my query.......

I cannot find Thomas arriving in Australia, in any state....

I have found a Samuel & Anna ( perhaps Hannah ) arriving in Australia & have details on their movements, assuming they are Thomas's sibling, but even their details are pretty vague.

Any tips on where else I could search.

1841 census
Parish of St Andrews, Steel Street
Father Samuel aged 40 China Merchant
Mother Jane aged 35 "
Sibling John aged 16 "
Sibling Samuel aged 14 "
Thomas aged 11
Hannah aged 8
James aged 5
Rebecca aged 3
Robert aged 2

Thanks in advance

Although I can't offer any suggestions to help your research, I would like to say "A warm welcome to Talking Scot". There are several Australian members who will surely come up with some excellent suggestions for you.

Best wishes

Hi Kymbo
and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

The 1841 and 1851 census details you mention - could you maybe tell us where in Scotland your gg grandfather was at these times? Glasgow?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Ladies

Thankyou for your warm welcome

1841 Census

Surname listed as ELLBURN

Name: The 9 family members as per my last post
District: Glasgow
County: Lanark
Parish: St Andrews
Address: Steel or Stull Street
Source: Scotlandpeople
Gros Data: 644/01 109/01 011

1851 Census

Surname listed as Elborne

Name: Samuel & Jane
Parish: St Andrews
Address: 55 Back of Lane of the Andrew Square
Source: Scotlandpeople
Gros Data: 644/01 280/01 022

Name listed as Elborn

Name: Thomas
Parish: ?? nothing written on census page
Address: 103 Gallorgate Street ( I think, not too clear)
Source: Scotlandpeople
Gros Data: 644/01 291/01 015

Now I know you are probably thinking that I may have the wrong family, I thought that too. But I have to go through the process of elimination. But I am sure all the above works in. With further facts I will go ahead & order some certificates.

David (DWW) from this site is coming over to Australia in the next few days & I have booked a place for a special seminar at my local Family History Society where he will be the guest speaker. I am looking forward to that.

By the way I have been trying to imagine what ELBORN would sound like to an Aussie with a Scottish person speaking.... would I be right in thinking it would be ULBUUURN.

Looking forward to any help anyone can give me

Thanks in advance

Hi Kym

I'm no good on the Australian end and it appears that is where you still have the most holes. I have to admit that the Glasgow family looks very plausible! The names all fit! Interesting too is the fact that if this is your family then they did not all emigrate. There is a MC waiting to be veiwed on Scotland'sPeople in 1857 for brother? James

1857 ELBORN JAMES BRYSON MARGARET

This will give a variation on the occupation of Samuel.......give you Jane's maiden name......and might be a pointer at another clue. Any idea what religion Thomas was??? The marriage of James above was in the Wesleyan Methodist Church. This might be another aspect that could cement the family more securely to your tree or give a hint as to where else to look for possible marriage details???

There's even more on ScotlandsPeople too if you're sure this is your family. You'll find a remarriage for father and a marriage for Robert and John has a daughter marrying in 1880. So far I've found nothing on a Thomas or the two other siblings you found in Australia....so even more likely this is the right family for you.

Hope David can help you figure this all out :D !

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks Jean

Isn't it amazing, I'm in Australia, your in USA & you are giving me information about Scottish people from the mid 1880"s.

I am very new to this research world, so can you tell me what this means:

"There is a MC waiting to be viewed on Scotland'sPople in 1857 forbrother James?"

Does that mean someone else out there is searching the same family?

If so, where on that site do I see who is waiting for what?

If you need any help in Oz, just let me know

Thanks again
Kym

Hi Kym

Yup...ain't the internet great!

Ok...sorry to confuse. I was referring the the website "Scotland's People" which can be linked to at the top of our forum by clicking on the appropriate button. This is the website (yeah it's pay per view but still very affordable!) where you can purchase and view Statutory Scottish records right online. Also census records. I did a search and purchased the view of the Marriage Certificate for a James Elborn and on it states the parents and a wealth of other information. Enough info so it was clear he was the same James that you list in the 1841 family. I've learned that oftentimes by broadening the search to include a whole family you can determine many more factors that will either improve the connections you are seeking or eliminate them. So far I've found nothing to eliminate this ELBORN family from being "yours".

You're in for a treat as David will be talking about Scotlands People and TalkingScot and everything else he's expert at!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Kym

On the Australian scene, on the AVRI I found the birth of a Hannah Elborn - father Thos, mother Cath Elborn, Reg year 1859 - & I assume this is your lass. There is a death for Cath Hetherington Elburn - Essendon, 1887, aged 61 - Father Jas Hetherinton (missing the "g") mother Ellen Foley, so they may have been married

There are many spellings of the name Elborn on the AVRI, and no doubt also on the VIC BDM disks. Have you checked all the variations? I've noted ELBAIRN, ELBENE, ELBON, ELBORN, ELBORNE, ELBOUN, ELBOURN, ELBOURNE - there may be others.

Your John Thomas appears to be on my CD as John Thomas Elbom, father Thomas, mother Margaret Fitzgerald. This may be a completely different family perhaps?
