WALTER MARSHALL - disappeared!!! .....
Don't suppose anyone can help me find out what happened to my Gt. Uncle Walter Marshall, who was supposed to travel to Australia in the late 1800's to deliver a stallion for Alexander Morton and was never heard from again. He was born 1844 in Kilmacolm Renfrewshire and is listed on the 1861 census for Kilmacolm, working at a farm for a Matthew Scott called Craigens, Kilmacolm. It was some time after this that he travelled to Australia. Did he die at sea or settle in Australia I wonder? Anyone with any ideas as to how I can solve the mystery?

Hullo Grace
Sorry I can't answer your question: "What happened to my Gt Uncle Walter Marshall?"
I did wonder though if he had made a will before he disappeared. One of my Renfrewshire ancestors did and it was from the execution of his will that I learned that he had died at sea, between Suez and Bombay, possibly on the way to Australia. It may be worth a look at SP wills.
Best wishes

WALTER MARSHALL - disappeared!!!
Thanks Catriona for that suggestion, I certainly will try, but I'm not too optimistic about that as he was still living with his parents and single, don't suppose he had much to leave anyone at that time, but anythings worth looking into, its one of those family mysteries, never solved! If I was nearer to some of the libraries in Renfrewshire, I would have a look at some of the old newpapers they have in their archives, the story of his disappearance may have been covered who knows? Anyway I will do that at some time in the future. Thanks again.

Hi Grace
I had a quick look in the NSW BDM online index & there are 20 Walter Marshall marriages between 1861-1920 & 11 deaths between 1861 & 1945.
Most list parents names, so if you could tell me his parents names I could look a little further for you.
ALso the gentleman he was delivering the horse to, do you know what area he was residing in.
I will keep looking for you

WALTER MARSHALL - disappeared!!!
Hi Kym,
The parents of Walter Marshall, born 24/7/1844 were Joseph Marshall and Margaret Love. I don't know where in Australia he was to deliver the horse, that aspect never came down the family, but I know Alexander Morton, who was a farmer, showed horses as well as worked them, so it might well have been a heavy horse going to a farming district, or on the other hand a stallion of a finer type. I don't know why, but I feel he reached Australia and for whatever reason, chose not return to his family in Renfrewshire. It has never been said that the ship he was in (name unknown) went down in the sea. Any help would be much appreciated to help solve the Marshall mystery in the family. thanks again Kym.

Hi Grace
I searched NSW BDM as it is free to search online, at
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
There is a Walter Marshall who died @ Paddington, age 60, in 1908, fits approx., however parents names are not stated.
When I am at my historical society next, I will check the other states for you.

WALTER MARSHALL - disappeared!!!
Hi Kym,
Many thanks for your efforts on my behalf, I wonder if this is my Walter Marshall? I would be pleased to hear about anything you might find. when he lived in Scotland on the 1861 census he was working at a nearby farm. His fathers own small farm already had another two sons working there. Of course he may well have turned his hand to something else, anyway I look forward to hearing from you in due course, thanks again.

Waletr Marshall
Hi Grace
THe follwoing is what i found today, however I may have missed some other entries, but these may give you some leads.
Immigration Records for Victoria Australia
Walter Marshall Dec 1866 on the ship " Swiftsure"
Walter Marshall Aug 1879 on the ship " City of London"
Marriages for any Walter MARSHALL
1872 to Sarah Annie FREEMAN
this entry states Watler was born in Renfrewshire & Sarah
was born in Worcester.
Rego # 3173
The follwoing is the one I would think fits better
1885 to Jane Darling MYERS
this entry states Walter was born in Scotland & Jane in
Ballarat Vic.
Rego # 3715
Jane was born 1862, father Robert MYERS & mother Ann CAIRNS
her middle name was listed as Dowling, but all futher records show it as Darling.
There is an entry for a Jane Marshall who died 1906 age 44 @Melbourne East, Victoria rego # 6142
Walter & Jane had 2 daughters that I could find
Margaret Annie Violet born 1890 @Maidstone Vic.
Jane Grace Darling born 1892 @ Maidstone Vic.
Margaret married Albert Henry HANSFORD @ Avoca Vic in 1911
rego # 4760
There is an entry for a Jane Marshall marrying Frances Johnathon Thomas KING in 1914 in Vic rego # 23.
There is a record of a child to Margaret & Frances, a Layton Marshall KING
born 1919 in Vic. (Mother name spelt as Jean)
There is a death entry for a Jane King who died 1973 age 80 in Victoria
parents names are unknown.
Now it is possible Walter any of these Walters had another marriage or it could be a NEW Walter, as there is a marriage entry for a Walter MARSHALL to Nellie MURPHY @Vic in 1915 rego # 9997
They had 2 children Alan Walter born 1917 & Joyce Betsy born 1919, both in Victoria
And yet another one, a Walter Joseph Marshall marrying a Ruby Janet RICH in 1916 Victoria rego # 822, they had a child Walter Joseph born 1918 in Victoria,
The later Walters could be a son of the ORIGINAL Walter & I may have missed a birth record.
I looked & looked but couldn't find a death record for the ORIGINAL Walter.
I will keep my eyes peeled for any more entries that may fit.
By the way, Victorian ( Australia) certificates can be purchased online at
http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servle ... chCriteria
They are approx A$17-50 each, however you have to search first & to view your search results you have to enter your credit card details which gives you a spending limit of UP TO $10-00. Each page of search returns costs you 99cents to view. SO you can go through a process of elimination before you pay to view. But if you say, only look at 2 pages, you will only be charges $1-98....
The certificates I have purchased online for Victoria have given me very good leads, as the marriage certificates state parents names & callings & where bride & groom where married.
Ok, that should get you searching for a while.
Good luck, Kym
PST by the way, you don't know anybody with the surname ELBORN do you?? most of my lot came from Lanarkshire.

WALTER MARSHALL - disappeared!!!
Hi Kym,
You're a star, many many thanks for all this Australian info., I will have to study it furthr, but I think there might be a lead here, and thanks also for details of where to get records, I shall try that. As for Genes United, well I was a member originally but let it lapse, so may join up again, anythings worth trying to solve the mystery, but you have been my best bet so far.
As for the surname Elborn, now I have seen that name or Eliborn in my travels, but can't for the life of me remember where! Will have to have a look in some of the mountain of paper I have here and if I find anything will get back to you Kym. Many thanks in the meantime.
