West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide .....

Post by SarahND » Wed Nov 29, 2006 7:05 pm

I found a burial record, sent to a distant relative perhaps 20 years ago(?) from the South Australia Genealogy and Heraldry Society

GILES
WEST TER. CEM
Rd./Area 1-2
Path 18w

Edward Fr. 25-2-1828/25-9-49 (to the memory of a most dutiful son Edward Fry GILES, senior assistant at British Consulate Canton, China came to Adelaide for recovery of his health & died 25-10-1849, born in Aberdeen Scotland 24-2-1828. Erected by his parents James GILES R.S,A, & Clementina Farquharson.)

The friend who sent the record wrote underneath that she had tried to find the gravestone, but that it was completely overgrown "At present they are in the process of tidying up the grave yard, but have not got round to Edwards. It is really overgrown."

He apparently died in Burra, perhaps in the part known as "Aberdeen"!

Does anyone in this forum know the West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide and whether or not it is now "tidy" or still (or again) overgrown?

Thanks,
Sarah

No, I guess there are no TS members in Adelaide. Oh well. Maybe I'll get there one day...

Bonne Année à vous aussi! So far we have had an incredibly warm one here in the Corbières. 20 degrees C and sunny in January??? :D A bit wetter in Paris, I think. At least it was when we were up there a week or so ago, dropping our son at the airport (the same one who used to code-switch English to French and back again every other word when he was young-- now he's at university! Time flies...)

All the best to you and yours!
Sarah

Hi Sarah:

I must have missed the original post, so I'm glad Catriona's followed up on it.

Although your Mr. Giles is not one of the photos on this site, there are some from The West Terrace Cemetary, and Paul and Stephanie seem to take specific requests:

I saved this when I was starting to search in Australia.

Good luck,

Hi Sarah

I just registered today, I live in Adelaide.

Do you still want the info? If so I'll go and have a look for you.
I'll take my camera and hopefully will get a good shot for you.
It may be a few days as it's so hot here at present but I promise to go.

Cheers :D

Hello Brenda,
Welcome to Talking Scot!! Yes, I am still very interested in getting a photo of Edward Giles' tombstone-- thanks so much for offering :D James Giles and his first wife had 5 sons and one daughter. All 5 of the sons died young- the one who lived the longest was only 24 at his death. Edward was the last son left-- then he too died (of tuberculosis, I think). Very sad. Edward was working for the British Consulate in China and went to Australia to try to regain his health-- but died there. He wrote a fascinating journal during his time in China.

Thanks again for your generous offer!! Wait until the weather cools down though-- musn't have you getting sunstroke out there!
All the best,

Sarah, trying to imagine hot weather, while in the middle of a snowstorm in Minnesota
