Where to start? WILLIAM SHAW .....

Post by ali » Thu Feb 22, 2007 8:49 am

Where do I start?

I have just found out from information on a Poor Record 1861 that WILLIAM SHAW Age 20 was in Australia.
Not sure when but I am guessing that it must have been late 1850's.

He was born c1840 Glasgow

Also cannot find his brother JAMES after 1861 he was b c 1838 GLASGOW
Wondering if he also came to OZ.

Parents
John Shaw & Mary Wardrop.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you.

Hi Ali:

This Australasia Passengers List site may be of some help.
http://www.list.jaunay.com/ausnzpassengers/

It also has links to other sources toward the end of the page. You just have to click on the red print to access those other sites.

Hope this helps,

Hi Ali,
What was James' occupation in 1861? Am I right that his father was a cotton handloom weaver, or do I have the wrong family? So many James Shaws that I'm hoping his occupation will help narrow down the field...
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thank you so much for looking into this for me.

Yes James's father John was a Hand loom Weaver in the 1851 census.

In the poor application dated 21/1/1861 James age 22 occupation a puddler but it states he's unfit and in poor health.

Cheers

Hmmm. I wonder if James died young? I can't find any likely candidates in the censuses.Did you find him in the 1861 census, or just in the poor application that year?

He is not with his parents, and the only James Shaws I can find in 1861 are:

1) A 22 yr old "Machine tenter" living with his grandfather John Christie and his younger brother John in Neilston, Renfrew

2) a 21 yr old Flesher in Greenock West, living with the McReath family as a son-in-law.

3) a 25 yr old coal miner in Bathgate, West Lothian, with his wife Jane and two sons.

4) a 21 yr old lodger in the Gardiner household in Glasgow. He is a plasterer.

So, not a single puddler in the lot.

But you really want to find him after 1861, so I have looked everywhere I can (but I can't check Australia) without much luck :(

Unless you like this one:

1870 22nd Ward, New York, New York
Shaw James, 30, silk factory, born Scotland
___ Amelia, 27, keeping house, born Scotland

I thought maybe the textile connection would be important, since his father was a handloom weaver, but probably not, since James was a puddler.

Sorry, I don't seem to be able to track him down. I am afraid he might have died. Fiddling with the search function on the Scotland's People site I see there is a James Shaw, born between 1837-1839, who died in Kilsyth, Stirling in 1862. His mother's maiden surname is not indexed under Wardrop or anything like it, though. It may well be him, however, since his parents and younger brother John were in Kilsyth in the 1861 census. Might be worth a look.

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Heather,

Thanks for taking time to have a look and for sending me the link.

I don't think it is my William I think he might have travelled without his family.
