The Ryerson index, an index to death notices appearing in current Australian newspapers is at this web address:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps
Please note the other link will slow your pc down.
There is another site that has been registered as www.ryersonindex.com. They have copied all the information from the real site and are pretending to be the real index..they are not. Phoney Site: http://www.ryersonindex.com>
The volunteers who work on the Ryerson Index are very upset about this and are seeking legal advice.
Hugh.

There is nothing worse than putting in alot of work and have someone try to pass it off as their own. I hope they get it sorted out. Sometimes it can be down to naivity which is fair enough I think but when it's not then it's something very wrong.

Hmmm...... not good.
Could copyright apply?, - certainly, but then there's a clear statment on the real site that ....
"This page was created as a project of the Sydney DPS, and subsequently donated to Rootsweb free of any restrictions, for the benefit of the worldwide genealogical community".
Sooo..... if someone takes that literally and captures all the info, it may be the case that the Sydney DPS have no recourse in law.
Whether or not they have a copyright notice on their site or not doesn't make any difference, the Sydney DPS held and hold copyright in their index, but, from my understanding of the situation, effectively waived their rights under copyright legislation when they put the above statement on their site.
It's a shame that they didn't take advice previously, as there ways in which they could have made such a "donation" but still protected their rights against such bulk downloading and copying.
Note that the real site has changed its web address to www.ryersonindex.org .
