Passenger Lists to South Africa

Post by tazzy » Sun Apr 22, 2012 11:03 pm

Can anyone possibly check if a John Lincoln MacGregor sailed to South Africa between 1900 and 1916 and returned either to Scotland or Canada
He was born in 1883 in Dufftown, Banffshire and married Maude Hill in 1916 in Vancouver but the family have a photograph of him in Johannesburg as a young man but so far my research has been unsuccessful.

Hi again Tazzy,

Not much luck with this request either, I'm afraid.

There is a John McGregor, Clerk, departing Glasgow 1908, destination is Cape, South Africa...no other information.

There is also a family of McGregor's departing from London 1911 going to South Africa.

The only info on the 1911 one is McGregor, Mr. K., draftsman, Mrs. R., J., James and lastly, John. There is no mention of ages or anything else.

Maybe someone with access to Ancestry passenger lists will have better luck.

Regards,
Anne H

Is it possible he fought in the Boer War? I'm not sure where to look to find those details for UK soldiers. The closest age match I see on ancestry - Liverpool to Quebec is someone being deported - so presumably not yours.

Hello Tazzy,

He was of Military age for WW1, do you know if he enlisted anywhere?

Has he been found anywhere on the 1901 or 1911 census?

What was the nature of the Johannesburg photograph, was there anything military about it, and was he with other people. You could post a copy of it on the TS Gallery or on a photo hosting site like photobucket if you think other eyes may help to find clues.

I don't see him in the list of those who joined in Canada in WWI - but maybe elsewhere

As far as I know he wasn't in the forces. He went to CanAda to work for the CPR in Vancouver.
A relative has a photo taken in Johannesburg but no military connections

Hello Tazzy,

CPR = Canadian Pacific Railway I suppose.

Photograph notations always seem to worry me as to who is doing the guessing about whom, when, and where.

Probably not him, but a search for John MacGregor, born 1883 +/-3, born Scotland, on the 1911 England census site, brings up only these two. I can’t see the full record.

Lastnames Firstnames Sex Birthyear Age District County
MACGREGOR JOHN M 1883 28 Fulham London
MACGREGOR JOHN 1885 26 Overseas Military

All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan

I was wandering that too about the photos. Possibly childhood memories and not correct.
John didn't go to England so wouldn't be on the 1911 census.
I found a John MacGregor sailing to Boston approx 1910. I know he was in Boston in 1912 as he sent a wedding present from Boston to his sister (my Granny) on her marriage then.
Anyway, I'll keep on researching.

Many thanks to all

Evelyn
