My presumed relative, Ninian Thrift, lived with his family on St. Ninian's Row in the early 1700's. Here are some interesting comments, including that of Sir Daniel Wilson, whose illustration was mentioned above

Walked up St Ninian's Row in Edinburgh a couple of months back, and remembered this old post!

“Birthday bumps” or “dumps” are a tradition in Scotland, especially in school playgrounds, where the birthday boy or girl was pursued in order to be given “dumps” or “bumps” - usually a series of bumps on the behind with a knee, corresponding to the number of years the birthday person had now reached (and sometimes an extra one for luck!). A decade late but St Ninian's Row predated the Waverly Station and the small houses shown were just the other side of the Regent Arch before you turned the corner to where the Orphans Hospital was before it was all demolished for the station.
