Land of Buss

Post by Andrew C. » Fri Nov 11, 2011 1:56 pm

I found a sibling of one of my vancestors living at "Land of Buss" in Aberdeenshire. When I did a search for Land of Buss most hits related to a "mythical" sunken island. Does anyone know anything about th ereal Land of Buss which I beleive is/was near Fyvie?

Hi Andrew

Have a look in here.... http://www.tribalpages.com/tribe/family ... e=Ironside

for the Lands of Buss entry against a James Ironside, then search for Byebush of Fedderate.... http://www.housepricespy.com/scotland/t ... 3-6UL.html

Thanks for that. James Ironside was one of the few hits I got when I Googled Land of Buss but never delved into him. Byebush Of The Fedderate is as just a bizarre name as Land of Buss! I have just looked at Freecen again and my chap John Chalmers is listed as farmer and shoemaker in 1841 and guess who is his apprentice, a George Ironside (Aged 15). On the tribal pages site you attached the link to there is a George Ironside born at Fettereso in 1825. I wonder if this is James Ironside's son? In 1851 John is at Auchreddie at New Deer I wonder if this is the same address?

Hello Andrew,

Just a few scraps that may be useful.

In 1851 on FreeCen Byebush seems to be down as By Bush, sometimes with Fedderat added.

The New Statistical Account, 1845.
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=EfE ... 22&f=false

The Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, June 23, 1869
Advert inserted by “James Park, Bush, New Deer”.

Aberdeen Weekly Journal, Monday, March 23, 1885
A small cottage at Byebush, Federate, belonging to and occupied by James Park, road contractor, destroyed by fire.

I think this is Byebush of Fedderate.

Hope that’s useful,

Re the last link in previous post...is that an amphibious vehicle on the left, or just a collection of storage tanks?

Hello Hibee,

You mean that funny looking thing just this side of the red car? Google thinks it has a number plate on it and has blotted it out.

From a bit further up the road it looks like it’s one piece and made of black plastic with a couple of warning signs and an inspection ladder. Maybe it’s some sort of new fangled sewerage treatment plant?

Or a UNFO?

All the best,
Alan

Thanks for that really interesting. Still curious to where the name Land of Buss comes from.

Hello Andrew,

The 1869 newspaper notice and the New Statistical Account just call the place Bush. In the NSA for New Deer there are several references to land of whatever: Land of Barrack, land of Culsh, and land of Brucklaw.

According to this 1825 dictionary Buss is old Scots for Bush, Bussie is Bushy, and so on.

My feeling is that it is a plastic cover over a bulk LPG container or oil storage tank. These are quite common in rural areas where there is no piped gas supply.

All the best,
