Pub in Church Street, Dumbarton?

Post by littlealison » Thu Jan 03, 2013 12:07 pm

Can anyone trace if there was a pub in that street in 1841? May be a long shot...

My gg-grandfather is down as 'Bottlemaker and Publican'....there were two publicans in the road though (FreeCen) - was there a pub? or did they, as I've read, just have licences to sell beer in a front room?

I'm thinking that a PO directory for the area may be worth looking for. Not seeing any for that area on the NLS site
http://digital.nls.uk/directories/
- not sure if there are any to be found elsewhere at the moment...a search may turn up something.

Maybe also worth checking the headers on SP for the area - just on the off chance the enumerator mentioned a pub!

Also old maps on the NLS site? This 1818 map may be of interest for the glassworks.

Later OS maps may be of use. Church Street clearly marked on this 1859 one:

Best wishes

Kirk Vennel on that map!
I have seen it, and not found a directory....I did know of another map of the works, on the Scran site, but it seems to have gone. It showed a lot more detail including the piggery! - Alison

Just a quick post.

According to a report in Parliamentary Papers, the number of retail and wholesale houses licensed for the sale of intoxicating liquors in the Parish of Dumbarton in 1853 was 35. The population was 4766 in 1851.

I am not surprised!
.....about one pub for every 30 men? Roughly? Allowing for a (nuclear) family with wife and 3 kids...only it was possibly more children then....

The Dumbarton Library was indeed very helpful, and came up with a pub in Church Street called the County Bar which was open from about 1800..........no proof, but certainly possible.
