Scarrel, Bute.....

I have updated the links to the maps in my post from 01 April 2006 above (previous page).

Also, in the last 10 years, Google Maps has evolved. Scarrel is (was) the cluster of buildings in the centre if this aerial view: Google Maps aerial view showing Scarrel, Bute. It looks like Scarrel is now accessed through the farm to its east (possibly is part of that farm nowadays).

I got sent this useful url by Canmore, which describes the Scarrall / Scarrell farm in a lot of detail.

Attached is the original file I found on John White stating he was born in Scarrald or Scarrell....
The spelling seems to change all the time!!!!

There's an advertisement in the Glasgow Herald, Friday, July 25, 1845, headed “Farms in Bute to be Let.” In the Parish of North Bute there's:--

“SCARREL, at present possessed by John Graham, extending to about 155 acres of Arable, Old Leys, Improvable, Shore and Hill Pasture. Of the Arable, from 50 to 60 acres are now under cultivation. This Farm is partly bounded by the Shores of the Kyles of Bute, from which a large supply of Seaware is collected, and admits of being much improved, and the Arable Land extended.”

I've been reading but have not dived into this conversation until now as my father passed away recently.

The John Graham you mention Curry is probably the father of my distant ancestor Alexander Graham, who was still on the farm in 1871. They left it before the 1881 census.
