Argyll Appin McColls any info .....

Post by Clarebelle » Tue Jul 25, 2006 5:35 pm

My GGGrandfather William McColl came to Australia about 1860 he married Jessie Robertson. The cert states his parents are Duncan McColl and Mary Stewart from Appin Argylshire I have searced extensively and cannot find them. Jessie Parents are Adam Robertson and Agnes Purves from Salton Haddington. What is the nearest city to Appin. Is it in the midlands.
Clarebelle Thankyou in anticipation. Any thoughts. I joined this site tonight I have been perusing now for about 2 hours it is fantastic.

Appin is in the west of Scotland, North of Glasgow by about 100 - 150 miles (can't remember exactly)

Addition: Here it is

And Saltoun is about 15 miles from Edinburgh near Tranent, Ormiston, Pencaitland, mostly small agricultural or mining villages. So another 60-70 miles from Glasgow.

So a couple of hundred miles but not as the crow flies. Even Scottish crows fly round the mountains not over them :D :D :D

Just wondered if you had tried the IGI (www.familysearch.org) and FreeCen (www.freecen.rootsweb.com) to find your relatives?

The IGI records the following birth for a Duncan McColl and Mary Stewart :

JEAN JANE MCCOLL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 30 JUL 1833 Lismore, Argyll, Scotland

so this looks like the family in 1841:

Piece: SCT1841/525 Place: Lismore & Appin-Argyllshire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Lismore & Appin Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 0 Page: 6
Address: Glasdruim

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born
MCCOLL Duncan M 50 Farmer Argyllshire
MCCOLL Mary F 40 Argyllshire
MCCOLL Betty F 12 Argyllshire
MCCOLL Paul M 10 Argyllshire
MCCOLL Jane F 8 Argyllshire
MCCOLL Willm. M 6 Argyllshire
MCCOLL Archd. M 4 Argyllshire
MCCOLL Ann F 1m Argyllshire

If you the go to FreeCen you also find Adam Robertson and his family living in Salton in 1841 and 1851.
