Old streets in Blantyre

Post by mcblondie » Mon Jul 02, 2007 6:59 pm

Can anyone tell me anything about a place called Hart's Land, Greenside Street, Blantyre. I've received a birth certificate for one of my relations who was born there in 1916. I'd like to know more about this place.

Now i was born and raised in Blantyre until age of 12 but don't remember such a street then again i was born in 1963... If anyone knows or knew the above address i would be grateful.

:)

hi Katie
From what I've come across in Edinbugh & Leith a place referred to as "someone's" land is often a building, which operated a bit like a tenenment, with lots of separate households living within that "land".
Many of the old houses in the high street in Edinburgh were "someone's land" such as "Gladstone's Land" which is open to the pulic as an example of ths layered kind of living.

Hi Katie, Harts Land or (Herts Lawn) as they say in Blantir.
This area taking in Greenside Street was known locally as the Stud, because of the profusion if children who where born and lived there!

The Cosy Corner Pub - Glasgow Road at Greenside Place Street opposite Harper's Garage.

From The Cosy Corner Pub which stood at this corner the shops were
Devanney' store, McGarvey the Barber, later Jimmy Cleary's, Peter Valerio Ice cream Parlour, Peter's special was a double chocolate side covered wafer with his special flavored ice cream, Bradley the Cobbler, Mrs Guy's wee sweetie shop and finally
The Central Bar Pub,( AKA. Sullivans, Fallons). Check it out at http://www.blantyre.biz

Hi Bill

Glad you have joined us [scotland-flag] [welcome]

It's great to have folk with specialised knowledge as members. I find that my local knowledge of Kilbarchan has come in useful many times particularly when the person who posed the question is located on the other side of the world. :? You have probably had many such enquiries on the Blantyre website.
