Hi
I am trying to find the parents of Donald McDonald who was born on
14 May 1794 on Ilse of Mull. He married Catherine Macquarie on
3 October 1826 in Parish of Kilinian and Kilmore Argyll.
Catherine's parents were Torcal Macquarie and Marion MacLean who married on 13 January 1792 at Oskamull. While I have a birth date for Marion I to do know the birthdate of Torcal. I believe he was born on Isle of Ulva. I would also like to find who his parents were.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Hi John,
Where have you already looked for information? Have you checked for Donald's birth on Scotland's People? There were 4 Donald McDonalds born or baptized in Argyll in 1794, but none of them in May. Where did you get the exact date and place for his birth? Just curious, since most records of birth give at least one parent's name.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
I made a mistake with Donald McDonald's birthdate-it should have read 24 May 1790, not 1794. I am fairly certain that this is his Birth/chr date based on 1841 census data which indicated he was 55 years old. Given the 5 year "rounding" in the 1841 census this would make his birth date circa 1786-1791. I located a Donald McDonald ScotlandsPeople birth/chr certificate for the 1790 date. The SP 1826 marriage extract for Donald and Catherine Macquarrie does not indicate who their parents were.
A search in SP and in the LDS IGI indicates Donald's parents could have been John McDonald and Janet Campbell. THIS IS WAHT I AM TRYING TO CONFIRM. However, they also had another son called Donald born in 1797. It seems unusual that "my" Donald should be the earlier one when the norm would be he had died pre 1797 and the next son would be called Donald.
Thanks
John

Hmmmm k You've got a tricky one here. However, I don't think the 1790 birth is the correct one, assuming he told the truth about his age in the census. The ages in 1841 were rounded down, so he should have been somewhere between 55 and 60, putting his birth between 1881 and 1886.
Have you found the family in 1851? This might help pinpoint the place of birth. And if you are very lucky, he might have died after 1854 and his parents were listed on his death certificate.
Good luck with this one!

Hi Sarah
He was not in 1851 census and his youngest child was born in 1845 so it is believed he died between 1846 and 1850. Unable to locate his date of death. I believe he was born on Ulva which was in the Parish of Kilinian and Kilmore 1847. His wife and 10 children emigrated to Australia in 1852 after the clearances on islands of Ulva and Gometra.
I will keep searching for confirmation. Thanks for your help.

Just to complicate life for you ....................
He could equally well have really been older than 60 at the time of the 1841 census, as it was the reported age that was rounded down, not the actual age.
In other words, if he was actually 63, but his age was shown on the census schedule as 59, that would appear as 55 in the enumeration book through the 1841 rounding procedure.
Equally well, if he was really 52, but shown in the schedule as anything between 55 and 59, that would be shown as 55 in the enumeration book
Thankfully, from the 1851 census onwards, ages shown in the individual household schedules were those shown in the enumeration books

Re: McDonald and MacQuarrie families
Hi.
I have Donald McDonald and Catherine MacQueen in my tree.
Donald was born on 23rd March 1785 in Ulva Mull and Catherine 19th Feb 1804 in Ferininandry Isle of Ulva Argyllshire Scotland.
They were married on 3rd October 1826 in Oskamull.
I haven't gone further back yet, except that Catherines parents are Torcal and Marion.
I will be doing further investigations later on though.
Donald and Catherine had 10 children.
The youngest was born in 1826 and the oldest in 1845.
Donald passed away in 1847 at Isle of Gometra.
Catherine passed away on 21st February 1875 in Branxholme in Victoria, Australia

hi Gayna,
That's very interesting information you have there.
The original poster hasn't posted for some time, but hopefully they'll get an notification that you have responded here.
It's quite amazing how much more information has made it on-line, and is easily accessible, compared to 2007!
