Fleckie

Post by kr236rk » Wed Nov 27, 2024 2:10 am

Hello,

I saw several threads at this forum discussing the Scottish surname Fleckie. One said:

"From ... searches in Scotland, there were two baps of an Andrew Affleck... Andrew bap 22.7.1760, father John and mother Helen Young, Hownam, Roxburgh (from the Fleckie gypsies)"

https://www.talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13617

I was curious to know how the Fleckie name had come to be associated with gypsies, I cannot trace the post's author.

Help appreciated, & thank you for adding me to the group! 👍

If you do an online search for Fleckie Gypsies there are several entries which claim that Fleckie is one of the common names used by Gypsies from the Borders area - Some of the links refer to this Book Scottish Gypsies under the Stewarts published in 1894 (although there is only one mention of a Fleckie - page 8 )
