Hi everyone
Thought I'd throw my two bits into the ring. Long shot but there is a Mary McDade age 22 arriving in Boston on 9 Oct 1891 on board the Scandinavian. Records state her occupation as "weaver" and her intended destination was Rhode Island. She also states she was a citizen of Scotland, born Scotland, and last lived Scotland. The ship had sailed from Glasgow. It appears she traveled alone...no other surname McDade on the list. Marital Status was not asked on this form.
The age is a bit off but still within fudging range....
That's all I have at the moment....
Jean

Hello Debbie,
I see from your first post of 24 February that you are hesitant to spend money in the quest for your family history. Unfortunately, genealogical quests are not inexpensive and you will find the success you achieve will be in direct proportion to the amount of money you are willing to spend. That being said, please list the names of your deceased relations who died in Massachusetts. If it was a female relation, please list both her maiden surname and married name. If you know where and about when they died, please include that information too. It may take me a couple of weeks (more snow today…14 inches) but I will do a few “look-ups” at the Mass. Archives and at Mass. Health for you. The records are there.

Hello Debbie,
First allow me to welcome you to the world of genealogy and next I want to echo BobG's statement in regards to the level of success you wish to achieve with your research. BobG had given me the same advise just about a year ago next week and he was 100% correct. So I began my research on paper back to Scotland with my Morning & Dixon families, also from Johnstone and I'm very pleased with the results I've achived this far on Scotlandspeople. It has been well worth the investment and not to mention all the helpful replies you'll receive from the folks here on TS.
Next, if your g grandmother, Mary McMahon was born in Glasgow, between 1860-1862, you should be able to find her birth record on Scotlandpeople and the names of her parents will be confirmed. The results will save you much wasted time.
Lastly, Jean mentions a Mary McDade arriving into Boston 9 Oct 1891,with her intended destination being Rhode Island. If your research brings you into Rhode Island, I may be able to help with a look up
Regards
Marilyn

McDade
Thank you Jean, Bob, and Marilyn. I will get the name and exact birth of my aunt Mary my gram's sister whom is the daughter of Mary Parker- Mcdade also. I know she died in Worcester Mass. WHen I am not to sure. Also my grams brother George Parker died in Mass as well. As for Marilyn I see you are in RI. I am from Warwick RI..born and raised. My gram Matilda Sarah Parker-Leach passed away in April of 1992 and in Warwick. She was born July 11,1907. Her mom is Mary Mcdade-Parker which I know for sure died either in MAss or RI around 1957 ( I know that because she died when my dad was 14 and he was born in 1943. ..she lived to be 92. THis is alot harder than I thought it would be..but I am not giving up. THank you again for all your help

Hi again, this lot are driving me scatty.
Mary McDade who married John Parker was born abt 1865 (from her age on the obit abt 1957). It is highly unlikely, biologically, that Matilda, George or Mary were born after 1910. Your father was born abt 1943 so it's unlikely that Matilda was born before 1898. Therefore there should be a Matilda Parker in the 1920 census or, if she got married just before then, a Matilda Leach.
There are only two Matilda Parkers within 5 years either side of the possible timeframe. A married Matilda Parker in New York and another who was an Orphaned inmate at the Sisters of Good Shepard, convent in Kentucky.
There is only one Matilda Leach/Leech a "Mulatto" stepchild in Arkansas
Searched for Mary Parker born Scotland, there are three listed, none are yours. The closest was a Mary Parker married (husband not home) in Chicago but the childrens' names were Edith, Ralph and Mary.
Did a Social Security death search for Mary Parker around 1957, nothing. Widened the search and a few pop up in Ma. but none even close to birth or death years.
Do you have a more accurate idea of Matilda (Parker) Leach's age???

Have now tied Ancestry.com databases into knots searching for this family.
1910, 1920 and 1930 there are no Matilda, Tilda, Matty, Mattie, Tillie, Tillie, M, M. S. OR Sarahs who fit the bill.
This is based upon given name searches giving birth years from 1905 to 1915 where applicable.
This lot have got me completely stumped and you won't see that typed very often.

Hi Andy
Here in the US, applications for a Social Security account/card/number started in 1936. The death records of a person with an account were kept manually by the Social Security Administration until the introduction of computers in the mid 1960’s. To the best of my knowledge, the records of the people with a Social Security account who died between 1937 and the advent of the SS computer system, have not been computerized and are not available on line. If you use search criteria of pre mid 1960's, few or none will show up. My grandfather who died in 1960 doesn’t show up, however, my father who died in 1969 does.
Other reasons a person may not show up in the SS index…
1. Their death has not been reported to the Social Security Administration... it does happen
2. The person worked for the railroads, which had it’s own benefits program
3. The person was a teacher and they too had their own benefits program (I was told this)
Just because a person’s death doesn’t show up in the index doesn’t mean there are no records for that person. If the person in question filled out an application for an SS account and almost everyone did in the beginning (it’s now mandatory and done at birth), that record is on file with the Social Security Administration. If you know the persons name, where they were born and birth date, you can send for the record. I believe it now costs $39.00 US dollars. A bit pricey if you’re not sure it’s the correct person. Here in the US, a person’s Social Security number is a prime means of identification.
Debbie,
I don’t need exact dates. About dates works well for me too. What confuses me is how you are listing your female names i.e., Mary Parker-Mcdade. Was her name hyphenated or is that how you are writing her maiden surname (Parker) and her married name Mcdade?

FOUND THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1920 census for Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island
John G. Parker, a carpenter, age 52 (birth year approx 1868) born England arrived USA 1893 naturalized 1911
Mary A. Parker 53 born Scotland arrived USA 1893
Matilda 12 Daughter single born Mass
Anna N. 30 Daughter single born England arrived USA 1893
Jane C. Pierce 21 Married Daughter born Mass.
George A. Pierce 2 Son single born Rhode Island (Fathers details unknown)
So that looks like another two aunties for your dad.
Now it's easy:
1910 census Massachusetts Worcester
John G. Parker Teamster (Coal) age 41 born England arrived USA 1893
Mary 43 Wife born Scotland arrived USA 1893
John H. 21 son single born England arrived USA 1893
Annie N 19 dau single born England arrived USA 1893
Arthur 15 son single born Mass
Jane 12 dau single born Mass
George 9 son single born Mass
Mary 6 dau single born Mass
Matilda 2 dau single born Mass
Daniel J. 6 months single born Mass
You'll have to ask someone to look up the 1900 census for Ma.
The 1891 census for England is now available as is the 1901, 1881, 1871 and parts of the 1861 so England are pulling ahead after a Scottish five year head start and only about a tenth of the number of Records the English have!!!
Out of the jaws of victory Scotland, once again, grabs defeat!

There are John and Mary Parkers arriving through Ellis Island in 1893 but (like all too many other) the index doesn't match the images.
Bob, Thanks for the Social Security info. As you know I'm no expert on the American side of things but was VERY relieved to finally find the Parkers.
