I am having a lot of difficulty in associating the name of the spouse of my relative John Collie.
I have the OPR for the marriage (18 Oct 1781 - Edinburgh Parish) which states the spouse to be Janet More, and her father stated as John More.
However as the children arrive Janet More changes to Janet Moir and then back to Janet More. The children's father name stays as John Collie.
The writing in the OPR's is reasonably clear and More and Moir are quite identifiable in all cases. Maybe it is in the pronunciation ?
I am also havig difficulty in identifying John Collie's parents and where he was born. I have an indication that he was born about 1755-1759.
His profesion is given as Shoemaker in the OPR's for the childrens births
Does anyone have any ideas how I can pin down Janet's surname and also locate John Collies Parents and birth place.
I appreciate I am asking a lot this far back but hope someone has these names in a family tree somewhere.
Regards

Hi Stuart
Spelling was a lot more fluid back then than we are used to today, so your guess that "Maybe it is in the pronunciation ? " is pretty accurate. I wouldn't worry too much about a surname turning up with different spellings as long as it sounds the same.
Where have you looked for John's birth? Have you already checked IGI and SP? Sometimes it depends on the luck of the draw back in teh 1700s - if the parish he was born in kept regular records and even if they had done...if those records have survived.
Also, looking at the names of his children will often gives clues as to the names of his parents, which can help sometimes to weed out a few couples.
On SP, I'm seeing 13 John Collies born netween 1750-1761 in the whole of Scotland, 4 of those between 1755-1759. Also taek into account his surname may possibly turn up with a few variations too!!
Best wishes

Lesley,
Thanks for the info. I was afraid the answer may have been with spelling/pronunciation.
On the OPR marriage cert it shows him as being of College Kirk Parish which I believe to also be Trinity Parish. Janet More (Moir) was of Tron Parish. Both very close geographically.
The first child was Anne, the second was Margaret, the third was William and the fourth was Janet. All of which could give potential names for the Maternal and Paternal grandparents. It then goes haywire with Rebecca, Isabell and Jean !!
I have tried SP with the given names but don't get any connections.
Could be that the John Collie was not born in Edinburgh but perhaps Kincardine, Moray or even Aberdeen.
Any suggestions much welcome.
