Thomas Grieve and His Parents (Missing Records)

I am trying to find the whereabouts of the birth record of my Grandfather's Grandfather Thomas Grieve who, according to the 1901 and 1911 Census', was born in Edinburgh circa 1863. I have used countless credits on the ScotlandsPeople site and many hours of searching on other Genealogy sites (mainly FindMyPast, Ancestry, and FamilySearch) trying to locate the record over the past couple of years to no avail.

Also, I cannot find any records for his parents who are both listed on Thomas' Marriage and Death records as John Herbert Grieve and Margaret Grieve (nee Goodall). Due to the information on Thomas' marriage record in 1897 I know that they were both deceased by the time he became married, but am struggling to find any records at all for his parents. I am also not aware if Thomas had any siblings or not due to finding such little information.

If anyone could assist me or give me any advice on where I may be going wrong it would be much appreciated. I will attach a link to the aforementioned records to this post for your viewing as the files are too large to attach to this post.

Goodness, that's a bit of a puzzle.

Rather exact name and profession for his father, for us not to find him.
Though being a land surveyor could entail the family travelling around the country.

The surname Goodall is sometimes Goodale and in my experience comes from the Moray Firth area. That being said she's proving elusive too.
I'll mull it over more tomorrow.

All I could find for a surveying John Grieve were some entries about a fellow from Smailholm who had been a Land Surveyor and a part time author. In 1873 he went a bit off the rails.

That would give a starting point at least, and an explanation as to why JHG vanishes!

As he says Smailholm in 1852 when the book was published, I tried Roxburghshire in 1851 Freecen has this one:

A search here will find a John White Grieve admitted to Roxburgh District Asylum 13 October, 1873, and also an admission to Royal Edinburgh Asylum 24 February, 1875, with an additional name, James Murdoch. Admission forms are available for a fee.

So far we have middle names of Herbert, White, and M-something, plus the name of James Murdoch, and Dr. Tait, Rev. Mr. Swan, and the Duke of R. as reported in the newspaper.
