Thomas Grieve and His Parents (Missing Records)

Post by HeWhoDrinksGuinness » Wed Aug 31, 2022 2:47 pm

Hi :D

I am trying to find the whereabouts of the birth record of my Grandfather's Grandfather Thomas Grieve who, according to the 1901 and 1911 Census', was born in Edinburgh circa 1863. I have used countless credits on the ScotlandsPeople site and many hours of searching on other Genealogy sites (mainly FindMyPast, Ancestry, and FamilySearch) trying to locate the record over the past couple of years to no avail.

Also, I cannot find any records for his parents who are both listed on Thomas' Marriage and Death records as John Herbert Grieve and Margaret Grieve (nee Goodall). Due to the information on Thomas' marriage record in 1897 I know that they were both deceased by the time he became married, but am struggling to find any records at all for his parents. I am also not aware if Thomas had any siblings or not due to finding such little information.

If anyone could assist me or give me any advice on where I may be going wrong it would be much appreciated. I will attach a link to the aforementioned records to this post for your viewing as the files are too large to attach to this post.

1911 Census - https://freeimage.host/i/4iPzGf

Thanks!

Goodness, that's a bit of a puzzle.

Rather exact name and profession for his father, for us not to find him.
Though being a land surveyor could entail the family travelling around the country.

The surname Goodall is sometimes Goodale and in my experience comes from the Moray Firth area. That being said she's proving elusive too.
I'll mull it over more tomorrow.

I looked and also drew a blank.

All I could find for a surveying John Grieve were some entries about a fellow from Smailholm who had been a Land Surveyor and a part time author. In 1873 he went a bit off the rails.

Some interesting snippets Alan.

That would give a starting point at least, and an explanation as to why JHG vanishes!

As he says Smailholm in 1852 when the book was published, I tried Roxburghshire in 1851 Freecen has this one:
Piece: SCT1851/804 Place: St Boswells -Roxburghshire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: St Boswells Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: St Boswells
Folio: 806 Page: 11 Schedule: 45
Address: Bonvalis Cottage

Thank you very much to all of you for all of your help! The information suggests that this was indeed the John Grieve I have been seeking. I'm still rather confused about the whereabouts of his marriage record but I'll continue looking!

If that is indeed the John we were looking for, then this could be him in the 1841 census:
Piece: SCT1841/805 Place: Smailholm -Roxburghshire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Smailholm Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 1 Page: 5
Address: Smailholm

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
GRIEVE Robert M 50 Shoe Maker Roxburghshire
GRIEVE Margaret F 50 Outside Census County (1841)
GRIEVE James M 25 Shoe Maker Roxburghshire
GRIEVE William M 15 Ag. Lab. Roxburghshire
GRIEVE John M 13 Roxburghshire
Still tentative but we may be getting somewhere.
That family could be worth tracing forward, as well as back, in case any connections crop up under different guises.

A search here will find a John White Grieve admitted to Roxburgh District Asylum 13 October, 1873, and also an admission to Royal Edinburgh Asylum 24 February, 1875, with an additional name, James Murdoch. Admission forms are available for a fee.
https://www.scottishindexes.com/institutions/70.aspx

Something is also available via the entry on this long list.
https://www.oldscottish.com/asylum-pati ... rigor.html

So far we have middle names of Herbert, White, and M-something, plus the name of James Murdoch, and Dr. Tait, Rev. Mr. Swan, and the Duke of R. as reported in the newspaper.

The asylum admission records etc may be worth a look.

Well Done Alan,

I wonder what names the family have been hiding under?

On a side note, those links sent me scurrying down a rabbit hole and broke down a brickwall here ](*,)
