Isabella Paterson McIlwane.....

Post by denise agnew » Mon Jan 09, 2006 1:00 pm

Dear Folks, :D

I am a new member - not sure what I am doing but here goes. I have been trying for some time to locate details of my great grandmother Isabella Paterson McIlwane who was born in Patna, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1866. Father Andrew McIlwane (Pit Sinker) and mother Catherine Stewart McClement. Isabella came to Queensland, Australia on the "Berwick Law" from Glasgow in 1884. Two sisters went to Canada, one brother was already there, and a younger brother went not long after (1884).
The family does not appear on any census and I can find no record of the birth of Isabella nor marriage of her parents. Don't have any information on the names of the family members who went to Canada.
If anyone out there is researching McIlwanes it would be wonderful to learn something.
Thanks
Dee

Hi Dee,
Welcome to TalkingScot!
You'll no doubt have already discovered that "McILWANE" can have many spelling variations....
This Isabella has possibilities - Dalmellington is only abt 4mls SE of Patna.
But it's really stretching it to mean McILWANE (though it might be just a transcription error).

Not an easy one, given the myriad alternative spelling possibilities for this surname (and, I suspect, some search engine problems at SP..........)

Firstly, a wildcard search produces an 1871 census entry for Andrew and Catherine which is near certain to be the correct entry, - for MUCLIVEIN in Dalmellington, with 5 wains, the eldest two born in Ireland, so that the probability is that the marriage was in Ireland given that both parents were born there............

The Scottish birth record of one of the Scottish born wains as shown in 1871 gives the exact place and date of the marriage of the parents in Ireland !

Isabella's birth was not in 1866, and not in Patna, but the year is not that far off, likewise the location, and, in her case, the surname is close to that believed to be the case, except that that the "w" may just have been "iv" :!:  , but indexed as "w" but without the middle name believed to have been involved...............

The only "slight" problem is the maiden name shown for Catherine ........., but, despite that, the chances that the above referenced records are not the correct records has to be minimal ...........

Hello Denise

Oh my how I hope this will help you. My own grgrandmother was born in Patna in 1869. (I wonder if they knew each other  ) Actually the birthplace of mine is recorded as Dalrymple but I know they were living in the miner's rows above Patna.

I'm betting that your Isabella was not born in 1866 but perhaps a bit later...but the IGI records show a different surname for what I believe to be her mother!!

ISABELLA MCILWAIN
Female
Birth: 09 FEB 1868 Dalrymple, Ayr, Scotland

Parents:
Father: ANDREW MCILWAIN Family
Mother: CATHERINE MACMURRON

Source Information:
Batch No.:

These are the other births fromt he IGI to this couple:

4. EDWARD MCILWAIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 27 FEB 1866 Dalrymple, Ayr, Scotland

5. ISABELLA MCILWAIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 09 FEB 1868 Dalrymple, Ayr, Scotland

6. ANNIE CATHERINE MCILWAIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 11 JUN 1874 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

7. MARGARET MCILWAIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 08 MAR 1872 Dalmellington, Ayr, Scotland

In 1881 there is a Catherine, Margaret, and John that might be from this same family :?:

If it is them then perhaps both Andrew and Catherine were dead by then.

A lot of speculation but perhaps some clues that you could search out!!

Hope it is helpful

Best wishes

The birth register entries for Margaret and Annie Catherine appear to match the known information, - in other words, after a period in and around Dalmellington, the family moved to the Kilwinning area ........

Hi Dee,
Well it's not a transcription error for Isabella P. MUCKELINSHAME, age 15.
I'd a look at the original 1881 census page, and i really couldn't say the name was anything else but that!
At a pinch it could end "AINE", but maybe i see this because i know it should be "McILWAIN" or similar.

It does appear though that both parents, Andrew McILWANE & wife Catherine, have probably died 1874-1881.
The Andrew below isn't the father - the age on the original census page is 20yrs,
so he will be the son Andrew who was 11 on the 1871 Dalmellington census.
--
I'd written,
Andrew MC ILWAIN 30 M Ireland Rel: Boarder Occ: Coal Miner [doesn't say if married or widowed - age meant to be 50?]
Edward MC ILWAIN 15 M Dalrymple, Ayr, Scotland Rel: Boarder Occ: Coal Miner

It should read -
Andrew MC ILWAIN 20 M Ireland Rel: Boarder Occ: Coal Miner
Edward MC ILWAIN 15 M Dalrymple, Ayr, Scotland Rel: Boarder Occ: Coal Miner
