Old Postcards of Scottish People.....

Post by scooter » Mon Feb 06, 2006 1:00 pm

Hello,

I have recently finished digitising my Great Grandfather's postcard album and have posted all the images online on my website. I have included a section of miscellaneous people who I have no firm idea of identity, and would be interested to hear from anyone who might recognise any individuals. To give you some idea of locations, most of the cards are from Leith, Edinburgh, Dundee and Blairgowrie/Rattray.

Even though I don't know the people, or what relationship they had with my family, they are great to look at anyway. My two favourites are the family posing with a moth-eaten old stuffed Donkey at Portabello and a couple looking quite impassioned whilst sitting on a giant moon.

I'm sure everyone has photographs of unknown people in their collections, so if anything they serve as a reminder to write on the back of your prints!

Here's the link: http://scottwishart.co.uk/genealogy/albums/index.html and navigate to 'Miscellaneous Postcards' (five pages of images.)

Very best,

Scott

Hello Scott

I echo Lesley's words. Very tastefully designed.
I have lots of old photographs and its quite frustrating not knowing who they are. I often stare at them asking them to tell me who they are (like they are going to answer me and i would get a shock if they did !)
Over the past year or two i have managed via contacts to identify four of them. One particular one of a young family taken in England was identified from a photo taken years later at one of the childrens weddings which was found in a basement of a house in Pensylvania so you really never know where you are going to find your anwers :!:

Hi Lesley/Tracey,

Many thanks for your kind words regarding the site. All self taught! I’ve found having it a fantastic way to connect with relatives all over the world, some very closely connected to my family.

Totally agree about wishing that the nameless faces would break their silence and tell you who they are! Like you, I've been chipping away on them for some time now, the excitement one feels when you solve an identity is quite special. I've just written to a chap in Australia who I'm hoping is my Grandfather's cousin, and perhaps the key to unlocking a small pile of photographs from my Mother's side. Putting a face to a name in a family tree program really takes genealogy to a new level. At the same time I wonder about the 'unknowns' and lives they'd led until that point, and what happened after they left the studio and walked out onto the street. This is particularly poignant with the World War One soldiers; a few of whom you'll have noticed are rather young looking.

Back to the 21st century…..

Very best,

Scott

I am fortunate to know a lot about my lots everyday life covering a period of roughly 10 years and one reason some of my other photo's were identifiable is because there were graphic descriptions of them in letters in 1890,s - thats how i identified my gtx2 grandmother and gt grandfathers sisters and a niece. I have lots of names unconnected and am itching to find people related to them so i can pass the information on. I will get there !

Thank you for giving us the chance to look at those wonderful pictures Scott. You are so fortunate to have so many. I just love the ladies fashions and those hats! I have only one picture going back to my great grandmother on my mother's side - she looked as if she could be Al Capone's mother, with a machine gun tucked behind her. I am a bit reluctant to put that on show

I recently decided to have developed a whole heap of negatives which i had inherited along with various other "treasures" from my late father. These are brilliant - some of the people i recognised, some i didn't. I was lucky enough to be able to ask my aunt who could put a name to some of them but not all. I also managed to ask a lady who still lives in the area who gave me some more names.
I still have a few more wallets of negatives to be developed but I also now put names and dates on ALL my photos.

Fantastic site.I also struck by the youth of the WW1 Soldiers. Some looked about 12!
I have several WW1 photos of my Grandfather's including some of him with his brother(handsome pair) in the trenches. There are also photos in Erskine Hospital where he spent a long time being fitted for a false leg & retraining as a shoemaker.
My second cousin has given me a few copies of his photos but none are duplicates which is interesting.
Have odd ones who are not identifiable.I too write down names, relationships on all my photos now for that reason.

Your website is inspirational and very well done...... it leaves me wondering where on earth do I start with a whole host of photos from one old family album ( dated as a present on 1/9/1899 ) that is in my care.......surnames Jack, Yorkston are prominent and then a whole host of unidentified individuals. and then other albums with Lyon , Kelly and Douglas surnames prominent.

Roll on retirement when I might get down to following your example
